WINCHELSEA MAN FACES COURT FOR STALKING AND UPSKIRTING WOMEN
A man from Winchelsea, Jarmal David Richard, 54, appeared in Geelong Magistrates Court this week, facing numerous charges including stalking, upskirting, and sexual assault.
He denies the allegations.
Richard is charged with 13 offenses: one count of sexual assault, eight counts of stalking, and four counts of upskirting, involving eight different women.
The incidents reportedly occurred in various locations such as a home gym and a cafe throughout 2022.
According to the court, some of the alleged victims were acquainted with Richard through a running club.
In one instance, a woman was allegedly photographed while receiving a massage.
Police reportedly discovered hundreds of photos related to the victims.
During the hearing, Acting Sergeant Emmaline McKinnon, who led the investigation, testified about Richard's arrest and the evidence found on his phone.
Richard was apprehended on June 8 following a raid on his home, triggered by an incident at a shopping center in Waurn Ponds on May 22, 2022.
CCTV footage linked Richard to the car used in the incident, which was registered to his business.
Sergeant McKinnon explained that a forensic analysis of Richard's phone was conducted, and police compiled reports for each victim.
They identified images and videos of the complainants, some through car registrations captured in the photos.
One alleged victim had initially come forward in January 2022, but the case was closed with a statement of no complaint.
She later contacted police again, providing statements alongside her partner.
The court was shown videos allegedly taken from Richard's phone, which depicted women exercising, with the camera often focusing on their buttocks and ge***al areas.
In some videos, Richard appeared to be conversing with the women, who seemed unaware they were being recorded.
In one video, Richard was heard chuckling.
Richard’s lawyer contested the renaming of some files by Sergeant McKinnon, but Magistrate Urfa Masood dismissed the objection, asserting that the court understood the context of the labels.
The hearing, which began last week, is set to continue on Tuesday.
