HOMELESS IN HOTELS
Premiere of radio series capturing homelessness during COVID-19

Naarm - Melbourne, July 20th 2022

HOMELESS IN HOTELS, a 3-part radio series documenting life in hotels during the COVID-19 pandemic, premieres on July 28th on 3CR Community Radio.

The series captures the voices of Melbourne’s homeless community who went from a life on the street to life in hotels during the city’s curfew and rolling lockdowns.

‘Homeless in Hotels’ looks at an improvised response to homelessness by a government that was unprepared and lacking commitment to housing as a human right.

It asks how people managed their mental health, drug use and access to services and how support workers adapted to the shifting ground of the pandemic. Hear how the law affected the homeless community when it was illegal to be on the street.

The series highlights the needs and experiences of a community mostly removed from public view and discourse during COVID-19 and provides an opportunity for the wider community to reflect on life from the footpath before, during and after a pandemic.

Premiering on Thursday July 28th
12pm – 1pm

‘Homeless in Hotels’ is produced by people with a lived experience of homelessness and created in the studios of 3CR Community Radio, Fitzroy.

l really miss contributing to "Roominations". The crew are a great bunch of people and raising awareness of what life is like for people having a lived experience and giving them a voice, was a satisfying experience.

On this episode of Roominations we follow Kelly down to the Bellarine bayside town of Portarlington where she speaks to single mum, anarchist and community activist Rebecca, whose story of slumlord neglect in her tenanted home has some words of wisdom in it that are good for us all to hear.

We'll also eavesdrop on some of the awesome local women of Portarlington involved in the Food is Free Laneway. They've got a good little community going on down there and it's great to hear their reflections on what it means to them.

Hope you enjoy the show!
