Uncle Harry, lest we forget xx

Ahead of the Socceroos' next game against the USA, we wanted to shout out another soccer hero and trailblazer 💪🏽 Harry Williams, a proud Wiradjuri man, became the first Aboriginal person to represent Australia at the FIFA World Cup in 1974, when the squad competed in West Germany.

At just 19 years old, Harry was recruited for the national side, going from humble beginnings playing for St. George Police Boy's side in Sydney to an overseas tour in less than a decade. After playing only six games for the senior Australian team, he was selected for the 1970 world tour, before the team qualified for FIFA four years later. Harry represented Australia 43 times across his career, including 20 full 'A' internationals ⚽

After retiring from the game, Harry established the Harry Williams Cup, a First Nations soccer tournament, supporting the next generation of players in NSW. Harry was inducted into the Football Federation Australia Hall of Fame in 1999, one of the first to receive this honour. In 2020, he was inducted into the NSW Hall of Champions. A basketball court in Melbourne’s west is set to become the stage for a bold new production! 🏀

Rawcus Theatre is teaming up with the Altona All Abilities Inclusion Basketball Program for an energetic celebration of movement, sport and inclusion.

“In all the work I’ve done over the years, FANATICUS, the process and the outcome, is full of joy. It’s exuberant and taps into this liveness that you can feel and see," says Nilgun Guven from Rawcus.

I am about to deliver a speech at the AIATSIS Conference on the Gold Coast which will contribute to spreading the word about my work for the last five years towards establishing a national Blak Collaboration body in philanthropy. I walked alone along a packed surfers paradise beach at sunset tonight rehearsing my speech and saying “click” every time I need a slide to change in my PowerPoint being controlled by Aiatsis techs. Now I know who they’re talking about when they say you meet a lot of crazy’s in the Gold Coast! Wish me luck coz this one’s for you ###

We have a very important play on at Theatreworks in Melbourne at the moment called Lazarus about Vic Taungurong 👏 Elder Larry Walsh, who went from being a stolen child at 18 months old to a revered Victorian Elder.
Coinciding with Reconciliation Week deliberately, it is getting rave reviews today!
It will win several awards so be the one that said "I saw this when it started!"
