The Gate of Lions
The Lion Gate is the main entrance to the Mycenae citadel and was built around 1250 BC. It got its name from the famous relief of the two lions above the entrance.
It is the only remaining monument of Mycenaean sculpture, as well as the largest sculpture of the prehistoric Aegean. Another unique feature of this gate is that it is the only monument from the Bronze Age in Greece that has a pictorial motif and survived without being buried underground.
Descriptions of the Lion Gate already exist from the classical era in the works of Pausanias and Strabo.
