We had a change of plans… and spontaneously decided to head to Kalgoorlie!! 🌟 On our way we passed through the old mining town of Coolgardie, stopped for lunch and a walk around. Coolgardie is known as the “Mother of the Goldfields”, a historic gold rush town in Western Australia’s Goldfields. Famous as the birthplace of WA’s 1892 gold rush. Once Australia’s third largest town, it’s now known for its well preserved heritage buildings and museums offering a glimpse into the tough outback mining life.

We stopped in at the roadhouse, as it’s the home of the Golden Eagle Nugget! 🦅🌟It’s Australia’s largest gold nugget, found near Widgiemooltha Western Australia, in 1931 by 17-year-old Jim Larcombe. Weighing over 32 kg and roughly shaped like an eagle, its discovery sparked a major gold rush bringing prospectors to the area during the Great Depression. Today, a replica of the nugget is a landmark by the highway, and the story is a significant part of the Goldfields’ history, even inspiring a hole in the Nullarbor Links golf course.

Koonalda Homestead features a “car graveyard,” an assortment of old vehicles from the 1930s to 1960s that broke down and were left behind by travellers who couldn’t make the crossing on the old, rough dirt track. A few pics that we took while we were there.

Once a busy sheep station and a vital fuel and rest stop on the old Eyre Highway from the 1950s to the 1970s. Known for its unique atmosphere and historical significance, it is now a popular spot for remote camping and exploring. We camped the night beside the old shearers quarters with some great friends we met travelling. If you have the time, it’s definitely worth a stop!

Our hearts are heavy today 🤍🕊️
The attack at Bondi Beach on 14th December 2025 is devastating. Innocent people were killed and injured in a senseless act of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and all of those who have been affected, including those who were present at Bondi Beach and witnessed the unthinkable. Our thoughts are also with the first responders and brave people who stepped in to protect others from this terror. We express deep sorrow that such a horrendous crime could take place in our beautiful country. Hatred and violence have no place in our societies. Violence is destructive, but unity is indestructible. Show kindness, be compassionate and please take care of each other 🌻

Photo dump from our time camped at the Nullabor Roadhouse 🙌. Sensational sunsets, great company, good vibes and tasty burgers. We didn’t buy fuel here but we did fill up our water tanks for a few bucks!
