Part 2 ~ There’s so much Australian history in Darwin not always taught in classrooms and we took in as much of it as we could 🤓. On 19th February 1942, Darwin experienced a tragic loss when Japanese warplanes bombed the city during World War II. The attacking fleet was the same responsible for the infamous Pearl Harbour bombing 🛩️💥. This catastrophic event resulted in 235 deaths and injured another 300 to 400 people including soldiers and civilians. It remains one of Australia’s most devastating wartime attacks 🇦🇺
📍Stokes Hill Wharf
Stokes Hill Wharf features a memorial dedicated to the bombing of Darwin on February 19, 1942 and a large ship’s wheel inscribed with the words “United in Struggle, United in Sacrifice,” accompanied by historical photographs and plaques commemorating those who lost their lives. It was great to spent the afternoon at the wharf just taking in the serene sea breeze views. 🌊
📍WWII Oil Storage Tunnels
Visiting the WWII Oil Storage Tunnels was a truly unique experience. Built after Darwin was bombed during World War II, they provided a safer underground oil storage solution. It was very hot and humid when we were there wandering freely around the displays, which are very informative and well presented. The structures are an extraordinary reminder of a chapter of history that many people may not know much about. While they were never ultimately used for their intended purpose, the effort, sacrifice, and harsh conditions faced by the men who built them is to be commended.

📍Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT)
A quick visit to see local art, natural history and the Cyclone Tracy exhibit turned out not to be so quick. Once immersed in all of the history, reading stories and seeing the memorabilia, it was hard to leave. Tragically, in the early hours of Christmas Day 1974 Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin city, leading to the largest airlift and mass evacuation in Australian history. It’s thought provoking and really takes you back in time reliving that fateful Christmas Day that many suffered and endured 💔.
