Twenty years ago, Noosa Civic opened with a Big W and a promise: give this side of the river somewhere to call its own.

Now the six-year-olds who ran its walkways are pushing prams down them with their own kids. Managing Director Mark Stockwell sold the centre in 2012 and bought it back seven years later, proof it was never just a line on a balance sheet. Twenty years on, the centre's next chapter includes the Medihub, the Hof Apartments and a proposed Village Mixed Use precinct with cinemas.

Jocelyn Walker opened Queensland's first 24-hour self-serve service station in 1980. Decades later, she's helped secure an $18.5 million hangar for LifeFlight Sunshine Coast.

Awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2024 for service to the Sunshine Coast community, Jocelyn has spent 23 years on the University of the Sunshine Coast's foundation board (the Jocelyn and Vic Walker Legacy Scholarship carries her and her late husband's name), and nearly 30 years with LifeFlight, chairing its Regional Advisory Committee for nine of them. Last year alone, LifeFlight's Sunshine Coast and South Burnett base helped 672 people across 174 trauma missions. A new LifeFlight visitor and education centre at Sunshine Coast Airport now carries her name.

"After my husband passed away, I built a wall of friendships," Jocelyn says. "I've lived a magical life."

Nil Desperandum just beat the world for rum. Weeks later, it went local with 480 bottles of blueberry gin.

The Woombye distillery took home the Champion Australian Distiller (Medium) trophy and Best Rum honours at the Melbourne Royal Australian International Spirits Awards, the first year the competition opened to international entrants.

Their answer? A limited-run Blueberry Gin made with Mundubbera blueberries in partnership with the Mundubbera Jaycettes, timed to the town's Blueberry Festival, with proceeds supporting the local group behind it.

Only 480 bottles exist, landing 16 September at the distillery door in Woombye and online while stock lasts.

Kindness costs nothing, and it means everything.

Meet Jackie Andrews and Roy Meese, two Queensland Day Award-winning volunteers behind Waves of Kindness in Noosaville and Cooroy. Jackie's known for turning a hard day around with a friendly hello and a shop that plays music loud enough to sing along to. Roy, 80, still volunteers four days a week testing and tagging electrical stock, drawing on 45 years as an electrician.

Behind the racks is a care centre offering emergency relief, food vouchers, counselling and a weekly Breakfast Club feeding 13 local schools. Last year, Waves of Kindness gave $344,870 back to the community and helped 674 families and individuals.

Regeneration, it turns out, isn't just a project for the soil.

At Alsahwa Estate in Palmwoods, founder Jo Walker has built a 30-acre philosophy around slowing down, from the intimate Piccolo Weddings held in the Tunnel of Love, to corporate retreats built around beekeeping and farm tours, to a food forest planted in seven distinct layers that will one day feed diners at ēthos restaurant.

This September, the school holiday program brings Little Growers (24 Sept) and a Koala Detective Workshop led by 11-year-old expert Malani (30 Sept), plus Lawn Games running 19 September to 4 October.
