“Thumb sucking is a child’s earliest addiction.

👍 Research suggests sucking can actually have some really positive effects on premature babies resulting is shorter hospitalisation and better transition to feeding and oxygen levels. It was also noted that the heart-rate stabilises newborns may also initiate sucking to relieve physical pressures from a developing skull.

Although this is very good news for premature babies, once children have established their feeding patterns, this behaviour should eventually reduce.

The reason it continues is because IT FEELS GOOD!

There is a massive gratifying pay-off when it comes to thumb-sucking... a beautiful blend of dopamine, serotonin and endorphins - Not too dissimilar to nail-biting and binge-eating. It calms, soothes and helps to emotionally regulate.

No wonder it’s hard to give up.

So, if you’re looking for someone who will scare your child into stopping or recommends chilli powder on the fingernails... I won’t be for you.

But, if you’re after a gentle approach that dives into the root cause of the sucking, empowers your child and supports them fully... you’re in the right place.
