Training Tip Tuesday - you can’t reward a chocoholic with a banana!
I HATE bananas. In fact I detest them (sorry banana-lovers, I do recognise their value and think that they are a very conveniently packaged fruit, but alas, I can’t even stand the smell of them). If you needed me to help you out with something, and told me that you would give me a banana as payment, that would not motivate me at all. Offer me chocolate, on the other hand, and you would get a far more favourable response.
Our dogs are the same.
When training your dog, either particular skills or just what they can/can’t do around the house, it is important to remember that their reward needs to be something that THEY like, not what we think they like. Not all dogs love pats. Not all dogs love toys. Not all dogs love treats. If you give your dog something that they don’t particularly value as a ‘reward’, it will not reinforce the behaviour and make it more likely to occur in the future.
So don’t waste your or your dogs time - pay them with what THEY value, not with what you think they should value.
