Interior renovations to restore Newhaven’s old boys home will finish this month, with the owner planning to rent rooms for holiday accommodation next year, pending approval. The Advertiser was given a tour of the completed renovations last week, with 22 rooms, including seven apartments, as well as a gym, reception and a café, all for guest use only. Rooms are tailored to high-end customers, with restorations including leadlight glass, cornices, and chandeliers sourced from the likes of Crown Casino, the residence of Melbourne’s first lord mayor and the Savoy Brighton.

Work will begin on September 29 on the first stage of the Cowes Foreshore Precinct Project, which council says “will deliver significant civil and landscaping improvements along Thompson Avenue North and The Esplanade (between Bass Avenue and Warley Avenue)”. The Esplanade will be closed to traffic between Thompson and Bass avenues while essential services are upgraded in the area, including renewing water and sewer mains and reconstructing the road and pavement to better suit outdoor dining and provide a more pedestrian-friendly environment. Full details of the project (majority funded through a Federal Government grant) are on the Bass Coast Engage website.

Have your say: Cowes–Ventnor Shared Path

Bass Coast Shire Council has released plans for a new shared path linking Cowes and Ventnor, closing missing gaps in the local tracks and trails network.

The project will see two kilometres of new concrete path constructed, delivering a continuous 4.5km connection between the townships. It will also link into the Phillip Island Road Shared Path, the Cowes–Rhyll path and the Phillip Island Sporting Precinct.

Council says the new link will make walking, cycling and active transport safer, healthier and more enjoyable for locals and visitors, while reducing reliance on cars.

The $1.96 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Active Transport Fund and Council.

While it may have seemed like a wet winter at times, unfortunately the dry continues. Westernport Water has confirmed they will consider introducing water restrictions before summer if sufficient rain is not received and storage levels decline. The water authority revealed water consumption over winter (488 million litres) was more than double the amount of water that flowed into Candowie Reservoir (184ML), with our supply reliant on the Victorian Water Grid. In the 18 months to June, south-west Gippsland recorded its lowest rainfall on record.

The power of community was on full display at the San Remo, Cowes and Grantville Community Bank Grants Night, when $433,337.99 was awarded to community groups across the shire.
The event on September 10 was held at the Dalyston Football Netball Club and catered by the club.
“Over the past 22 years, we have given back more than $6 million in grants to local organisations,” Chair Kelvin Simpson told the packed room.
“Tonight is another example of the best of community banking; this extraordinary achievement is only possible thanks to the ongoing support of our wonderful customers and our brilliant staff and shareholders.”
Eighty percent of profits generated from the three banks stay in the region and are reinvested back into local clubs, groups and initiatives via grants and sponsorships.
The 2025 grants will support a diverse range of projects – from vital equipment for emergency services, to upgrades at community halls, to programs that nurture local sport, arts and culture.
The night was a wonderful reminder that when people choose to bank locally, their community directly benefits.
