Ten of Our Favourite Stops Along the Great Ocean Road
There’s just something about this coastline… it’s wild, dramatic and completely unforgettable. These were the stops that made us pull over, slow down and just take it all in 👇
✨ Lorne Pier – Built in 1877, this historic pier stretches into the bay and is known for the most beautiful sunrises along the coast. The morning we arrived was overcast and stormy, but just as we stood there, the sun broke through the clouds at the perfect moment — pure magic.
✨ Memorial Arch (Eastern View) – The official gateway to the Great Ocean Road, built to honour the returned soldiers who constructed this 243km stretch after WWI. A photo stop with real history behind it.
✨ Teddy’s Lookout – One of the best panoramic views of the road hugging the cliffs, with the Southern Ocean stretching endlessly beyond. It’s the kind of view that makes you feel small in the best way.
✨ The Grotto – A hidden gem where a sinkhole, rock pool and ocean meet. Raw, powerful and constantly changing with the tides.
✨ Princetown Recreation Reserve – A quiet riverside stop near the Twelve Apostles. The perfect overnight location and a beautiful place to slow down and soak up the peaceful side of the coast.
✨ London Arch – Formerly known as London Bridge before part of it collapsed in 1990. A striking reminder of how this coastline is always evolving.
✨ The Razorback – Tall, sharp and dramatic — one of the most impressive limestone formations along this stretch.
✨ The Twelve Apostles – The icons. Limestone stacks rising up to 45 metres from the Southern Ocean, shaped by wind and waves over millions of years. Watching the sunset here is something we’ll never forget. Stay a little longer and you might even catch a glimpse of the local penguins heading in for the night.
✨ Gibson Steps – 86 steps carved into the cliff face leading down to beach level, where you can stand beside the towering stacks known as Gog & Mogag. Seeing them from below is a whole different perspective.
✨ The Gables – A dirt road drive followed by a short walk to one of the highest coastal cliff lookouts in Australia. Wild, windswept and absolutely worth it.
If you’re planning this drive, don’t rush it. Pull over often, stay for golden hour, and let the coastline do its thing. 🤍
