PAROO’S TOP CITIZEN SHUNS AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS

PAROO’S CITIZEN of the year was the only no-show at the Australia day awards at the Cunnamulla pool this morning.
Instead, nominator-in-chief Jane Pike collected the certificate on Cate Beresford’s behalf. She said Cate detested being the centre of attention, shunned crowds and phoned the previous afternoon to say, Jane! I’m not going!
Mayor Suzette Beresford said 42 people in and around Eulo, a hamlet beside the Paroo river, 68km west of Cunnamulla, endorsed the handwritten citation.
Cate’s myriad roles included SES and rural fire-brigade volunteer, school bottle and can recycler, tourist meeter and greeter, naturalist, keeper of secrets, babysitter, vet nurse, town hall custodian, flying-doctor transporter and tree frog evicter.
Youth worker Jarib Branfield-Bradshaw, 20, was a shoo-in as the sole nominee for young citizen.
The mayor said he went above and beyond as the manager of the youth centre, was non-judgemental, up for a challenge and was probably a rare positive influence for some of his charges.
The nominations of two tennis players and the Noorama tennis tournament pointed to a revival of the sport.
Organiser of the Noorama cup on 9 October last year, Andrea McKenzie, 32, received the sports award for her efforts, which included winning the Noorama women’s singles and finishing runner-up in the singles and mixed doubles at the Cunnamulla open.
However, rhe Noorama tournament dipped out on the gong for event of the year, won by the reception for the Melbourne cup tour on 19 September.
The celebration, mostly organised by publican Peieta Mills and the shire council’s Bea Todd, ran to a street parade, with the audience seated at tables along Stockyard street, selfies with the solid-gold cup, a sportsman’s dinner and window and memorabilia displays.

Chrissy Higgins collects the award for event of the year from Paroo mayor Suzette Beresford and CEO Cassie White.

TRIHARDS FIRE UP DINKY-DIS

CUNNAMULLA’S Sunday-morning masochists from the triathlon club have launched Australia Day proceedings at the town pool. Questions were asked of the organisers when apprentice plumber Hayden Buckley ran down Schmidt Grazing’s Lauren Schmidt on the final leg to claim the $1000 winner’s cheque. Race boss Rodney ‘Jock’ Jones will have his name engraved on the trophy for the first time after throwing a scarred leg over a mountain bike from swimmer Trevor Jones. Free bacon and egg rolls are rolling off the production line.

CUNNAMULLA HOT SPRINGS OPENS AT 4.30PM

EVEN WITH the escalation in prices $10.5 million still buys you a reasonable sheep or cattle station. But it buys you only one new bore-bath setup and a pontoon poking into the Warrego river at Cunnamulla. Get the lowdown at the public launch at 4.30pm today. Everyone’s invited. National party federal leader and local MP David Littleproud is doing the honours. Can springs operator Charles Davidson work the same magic for Cunnamulla, population about 1000, that he did for Peninsula Hot Springs on the Mornington peninsula? Since he and his brother drilled that 637m bore in 2003, PHS has grown into an enterprise encompassing five springs, a staff of 440 and turning over $45m a year.
