A timely discussion by Australian Institute of International Affairs - South Australia. Australia may not build its own frontier AI, but it must retain the capacity to govern the technology, infrastructure and foreign dependencies on which its future prosperity and security will rely. AI sovereignty is not isolation; it is strategic control.
Artificial Intelligence is becoming central to Australia’s future economic prosperity and national security. However, much of the technology and underlying infrastructure remains far from Australian shores.
This raises an important question: how can Australia assert sovereignty and fully realise the benefits of AI while effectively mitigating the associated risks? Australia will not build its own frontier AI.
Sovereignty, then, is not about owning the technology, it’s about whether we retain the capacity to govern what we depend on.
