Skinnyfish

Skinnyfish Skinnyfish Music is a creative music business, working in music and cultural arts with First Nations and South East Asian communities.

Skinnyfish Music is a Darwin-based company which records and promotes the work of indigenous musicians. The fundamental philosophy behind this business is to empower indigenous Australians to generate and pursue their own creative and economic activity. Established in 1999 by Mark Grose (Managing Director) and Michael Hohnen (Creative Director), Skinnyfish Music works in partnership with artists a

nd their communities to produce music by, about and for them, and to take their music to the wider world. The company’s aim is to provide opportunities for and to nurture the talents of artists who hail from communities across Australia and the region from Timor to Tasmania – through recording, distribution, publishing and performance. Skinnyfish Music recognises the value of music for its beauty and ability to bring people together to affect positive change in people and entire communities; its role in recording and preserving language; and its expression of traditional and modern culture. Through the highest level of artistic endeavour and quality production, Skinnyfish is committed to presenting the music from indigenous Australia to national and international audiences. photocreditBrokenYellow.comAs music is increasingly recognised as a vehicle for communication and engagement, Skinnyfish has a strong emphasis on training and community development projects in the homelands of its artists. Through special projects such as song-writing workshops, video clip production and performance, important messages about health, education and wellbeing are conveyed through music. These projects form an essential part of Skinnyfish Music’s belief that music can be used as an agent for change in remote communities. Skinnyfish is committed to building long term relationships with musicians, their families and communities; and connecting with Australian and international artists, private organisations, government departments and many other associations which have significant influence on indigenous communities. Skinnyfish Music strives to maximise the positive impact that music can have on people’s lives while providing a window to the richness of indigenous Australian culture.

You cannot deny a voice like this. Someone who speaks from the heart, country, and soul.

So proud of this palawa singer Dewayne Everettsmith and his family, and where his spirit is at.

Thanks also to ABC Hobart Jano Gibson Erkki Veltheim and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

We are so happy to be helping this Timor-Leste crew with their visit in August coming to Darwin and can't wait to see Maun Izu after he rushed us to the hospital in Dili on our last visit!

Hamoris Lian Timor (Reviving the Sound of Timor), a powerful cultural project from Timor-Leste, is set to tour Australia, bringing the rich traditions, music, dance, and spoken stories of Timor to life on stage.

From the soaring mountains of Maubisse and Letefoho to the historic towns of Balibo, Dare, and the coastal capital Dili, this moving showcase captures the soul of a resilient nation.

As Timor-Leste marks more than 50 years of its diaspora in Australia, Hamoris Lian Timor also celebrates the enduring connection between the Timorese people and the Australian communities that welcomed them. The performances pay tribute to generations who carried their culture across oceans—preserving language, music, and identity through decades of displacement.

Anyone going to WOMADelaide?

Please go and see this incredible group of women - The Cloud Maker.

They have just released their album last week and appropriately they are performing on March 8. They have vinyl and CDs at Womad.

In 2025 on March 8, International Women's Day will be celebrated on Saturday. Apparently this year is extra special because it marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action - the most progressive and widely endorsed blueprint for women's and girls' rights worldwide.

These five female master musicians celebrate goddesses and ancient tales from their diverse cultures through their instrumental and vocal improvisations.

So proud of Iconyx with this story. Thanks to rage for playing the first video and single Mulyawongk this weekend, Laetitia in Darwin and the ABC crew in Perth for the quality storytelling, and Boss Arts Creative for your incredible leadership and support.

The 17-year-old from Western Australia has fought incredible odds of distance and disability to bring her debut album to the national stage.
