🎬In a major boost for the Victoria's screen industry, Docklands Studios Melbourne has landed international blockbuster Empire City, starring Gerard Butler (pictured).

Led by local producer Paul Currie (Better Man, Hacksaw Ridge), the production sees Melbourne doubling as New York City.

Billed as a Die Hard style hostage thriller, Empire City has Butler (Plane, Den of Thieves) as a NYC firefighter trying to rescue captives inside a landmark city building, alongside his NYPD wife played by Hayley Atwell (MIssion : Impossible, Captain America).

The $35 million injection into the Victorian economy includes:

* 350 jobs for crew
* 860 roles for cast, casuals, and extras
* 600 local businesses engaged

Empire City is the latest international project to film at Docklands Studios this year, following horror movie Insidious 6, psychological drama The Dispatcher, and World War II thriller Play Dead.

👻 The masters of horror are back!

Powerhouse Victorian filmmakers Leigh Whannell and James Wan have returned home to shoot the sixth instalment of the Insidious franchise right here at Docklands Studios Melbourne.

While the spine-tingling action unfolds on Stage 6, moody period streetscapes in Camberwell, Essendon and Kensington are doubling as New England.

🎬 The production is creating 513 local jobs – including 205 crew and 14 Victorian Heads of Department.

Insidious joins a growing list of genre films shot at Docklands Studios, including Late Night with the Devil, Together, Saccharine, Play Dead, and the recently wrapped Stake Out from Princess Pictures’ Laura Waters.

Producer Leigh Whannell says: “It’s a dream to bring an Insidious film back to my hometown.”

Meanwhile, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum calls Melbourne “an incredible city for filmmaking (with) its mix of world-class crews, cutting-edge facilities, and rich creative culture.”

The Insidious franchise has notched up $740 million worldwide since 2010.
