This week is Donate Life Week.
DonateLife Week is Australia’s major public awareness week to encourage more Australians to register and support organ and tissue donation in Australia.
Right now, around 1,800 to 2,000 Australians are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.
Currently, only 36 per cent of Australians have joined the Australian Organ Donor Register. It’s not because people don’t support organ donation: 4 in 5 Australians say they do. The challenge is turning that support into action (which means registering on the DonateLife Register.
Donation is made possible when a person’s family knows and supports their wishes to donate, and registration is the best way to communicate those wishes.
Around 8 in 10 of families agree to donation when a loved one registers, but only 4 in 10 families agree when someone’s wishes are unknown.
Registration is simple and only takes a minute at donatelife.gov.au or through your Medicare account.
