: Tasmanians would be forgiven for thinking they were experiencing déjà vu, because there is a lot that feels eerily similar to the election they had just 16 months ago, state political reporter Lucy MacDonald writes.

After the election no-one saw coming, what has Tasmania got? A parliament similar to the previous one — and no guarantee it will last.

An anti-salmon farm independent candidate is set to be elected to Tasmania's parliament — as part of a crossbench that could pose even more challenges for the Liberals and Labor.

Former ABC journalist Peter George will be elected in Franklin, describing the two major parties as "a bunch of squabblers" who need to engage more constructively with the crossbench.

The Tasmanian state election may deliver a status quo number of seats for the Liberals and Labor, a record-low primary vote for Labor, and another progressive crossbench.

With more pre-polls and postal votes to come, the Liberals are on track for 14 seats, Labor with 10 and the Greens with five — the same result as last year's election.

Tasmanians face another few weeks of political uncertainty after the state election delivered another hung parliament. Both the Liberals and Labor will now need to reach out to a progressive crossbench to see if government is possible.

The Liberals started on 14 seats and could gain seats.

Labor's vote has gone backwards with 14 percent of the vote counted.

On the latest count, the Liberal vote is up 2.5 percent.

Labor's vote is down around 4 percent.

This was Tasmania’s fourth election in seven years - set in motion by a no-confidence vote tabled by Opposition Leader Dean Winter during his budget reply speech.

Former federal Liberal Bridget Archer has been elected in the seat of Bass, the ABC can confirm.

During her time in federal Parliament the moderate maverick MP was known for crossing the floor and speaking out against her own party when she disagreed with it.

A popular local member, it surprised many when Ms Archer lost her seat at the May Federal election to Labor's relatively unknown Jess Teesdale. That election turned out to be a Liberal wipeout in Tasmania.

The ABC can also confirm Liberals leader Jeremy Rockliff has held the seat of Braddon.

With seven per cent of the vote counted, the ABC's chief election analyst Casey Briggs says so far the Liberals have 10 seats, Labor has 5, the Greens have 5, and Kristie Johnston is looking likely to be re-elected in Clark.

The figures also suggest the Liberals could win four seats in Braddon.

ABC's state political reporter Adam Langenberg says senior party sources have told the ABC the Tasmanian Labor Party will consider forming government if they win fewer seats than the Liberal Party in today’s state election, even if it means governing with the support of the Greens.

Labor's Sarah Lovell has told the ABC's election broadcast that the shape of the crossbench could be more important than which party has more seats. Liberal Eric Abetz said the party with more seats should get the first shot at power.

If you've been following the Tasmanian election and are eagerly awaiting an outcome tonight, you might need to temper your expectations.

Polls have consistently pointed to a likely hung parliament and a large crossbench, meaning a clear winner might not emerge right away.

How long will it take to know the result of the Tasmanian election? A record number of early votes means it could take time before an outcome is clear.
