Alpine Elegance on the Sydney Waterfront! 🏔️✨

We recently attended a spectacular Alto Adige wine showcase at Campbell’s Warehouse, exploring the precision, tension, and mountain freshness of Northern Italy’s finest drops. Led by industry experts Matt Irwin and Eduard Bernhart, the tasting highlighted how these unique alpine terroirs are perfectly capturing the contemporary Australian palate.

From the electric acidity of Pinot Grigio and intensely aromatic GewĂźrztraminer, to the vibrant, food-friendly Schiava and the deep, velvety richness of Lagrein, Alto Adige is proving to be an essential addition to premium wine lists nationwide.

Ancient Italian tradition meets modern Australian dining. Truly a masterclass in terroir-driven winemaking! 🍇🇮🇹

Maroubra’s local gastro scene is truly blossoming, and Promenade Bakery is a brilliant new addition! 🌊🥐

If you appreciate proper artisan baking, this recent arrival is an absolute must-visit. They are turning out some seriously great French baguettes and beautiful rustic loaves.

They also rightly pride themselves on a fantastic, creative range of pastries—offering everything from savory standouts like halloumi & oregano and spinach & feta, to delicate meringues and many other sweet morsels. The raspberry or grape Danishes also look absolutely spectacular and well worth trying!

A special shoutout has to go to the classic croissants, too; celebrity chef Manu Feildel reckons they are the best around, and it's hard to disagree with an endorsement like that!

To top it all off, they serve up an excellent cup of coffee, pouring top-quality beans from Double Roasters. ☕️

A fantastic spot that's elevating the neighborhood. Highly recommended for your next morning coffee and pastry run!

A Renaissance for Italian Wine in Australia! 🍷

Yesterday, the historic Watersedge at Campbell’s Stores hosted the prestigious Gambero Rosso Top Italian Wines Roadshow. Over 45 wineries and 170 labels showcased the very best of Italy to Sydney’s top trade professionals.

The buzz in the room wasn't just about the Nebbiolo—it was about the future. With the new Australia-EU Free Trade Agreement, we are looking at: reduced on Italian wine imports

As Giuseppe Carrus led masterclasses on Italy’s diverse terroir, the message was clear: the bridge between Italian vineyards and Australian glasses is getting stronger—and more affordable. 🥂

Showcase of 170+ premium Italian wines at Watersedge for an incredible- From volcanic Sicilian whites to bold Piedmont reds, the quality was unmatched.

But the real toast? The upcoming drop in tariffs and excise duties thanks to the new A-EU Free Trade Agreement! Soon, these world-class bottles will be more accessible than ever for the Australian hospitality sector.

Salute to a new era of Italian viticulture in Oz!

At $72 for the Carousel Buffet Lunch at Royal Plaza on Scotts, I walked away stuffed and pretty impressed with the value, especially by Singapore standards where wine taxes make everything sting. The seafood spread did the heavy lifting for me: a solid mix of chilled cooked prawns that were fresh and sweet, plump scallops that tasted like they hadn’t been sitting out all day, and excellent smoked and baked salmon that came with Capers and sauces - I built a decent plate of sushi and sashimi too, nothing wildly premium but fresh, clean, and well-handled, with Tuna being worth a mention.A side salad added some crunch between rounds. To wash it all down I started with a glass of Sileni NZ Sauvignon Blanc which was crisp and refreshing on the palate , a smart pairing for the seafood and worth it even though Singapore’s wine prices are steep thanks to taxes. After clearing a couple of seafood plates I doubled down on the carving station where the medium rare roast beef was genuinely rosy, tender, and properly seasoned, and I loaded up on dauphinoise-style potatoes that were rich and golden, plus a side of creamy spinach that tasted like steakhouse comfort food. Naturally I switched to a French Cabernet, the house pour, which was perfectly serviceable with the beef .Desserts sealed the deal: there was a wide spread but the standout for me was a decadent bread and butter pudding, warm, custardy, and not too sweet, which I finished off with a solid Americano. All in all it’s a damn good meal for $72 when you factor in the range and quality, and the hotel itself helped. Royal Plaza on Scotts isn’t super luxurious in a six-star sense, but it’s a comfortable, well-run 5-star that consistently gets rave reviews on Booking.com and Trip Advisor for service and cleanliness, and the location is a big selling point with Orchard Road shopping literally on the doorstep. If you’re a seafood and roast lover who wants to linger over lunch without blowing $150, Carousel hits the sweet spot. ‎

An Authentic Slice of Naples in the Heart of Sydney

Rating: ★★★★★

As someone who has traveled to Italy frequently as a guest of the Italian Trade Commission and served as a wine judge at the Concorso Enologico del Mondo in Verona, a few times I don't throw around praise for Cucina Italiana lightly. I have a very high benchmark for authenticity—and Antica Pizzeria Da Michele on Pitt Street absolutely nailed it.

This wasn’t just a meal; it was a reunion in Italy LOL! I was dining with an old barrister mate—with whom I went through detective training in the AFP, so there was plenty to catch up on. It was a "magic" Autumn day; the weather was perfect and Sydney was buzzing.

I truly relish the energy of a great restaurant. The interior is dominated by sleek marble and filled with a noisy, enthusiastic crowd. The staff were excellent, and the waiters are quintessentially Italian.

I started with a Campari Soda, a welcome dry change from the Aperol Spritzes of summer. My mate Michael relished the Peroni,.. We moved on to a classic Burrata and high-quality Prosciutto, served with wood-fired pizza foccacia that had that perfect char and chew. The house Pinot Grigio was "perfetto"!

The Paccheri alla Genovese was outstanding. The large tube pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, holding up beautifully against the savory, slow-braised Angus cheek and the sweetness of the caramelized onion sauce. It’s a soulful, traditional dish done with real integrity.

The star of the table, however, was the "humongous" Pizza. Loaded with rich formaggio, earthy European Cep mushrooms, and the unmistakable aroma of Tartufo (truffle), it was a masterclass in decadent flavors. We paired this with a nicely balanced, intense Montepulciano, which was a perfect match and a ovely, fresh side salad provided the perfect crunch.
Dolce

We finished the afternoon with the best Tiramisus I’ve ever had. It was remarkably light, with the cream not being at all overwhelming, followed by expertly made Espressos.

Finding a "fabulous" food experience like this in Sydney is a major win. Between the top-tier hospitality and the walk down memory lane with an "old copper mate," it was a flawless afternoon and we were both busy planning our next trips to the Amalfi Coast

When you can find an experience this authentic right here in the heart of Sydney, you are laughing!

VIVE LE VIN: ‘TASTING FRANCE’ 2026 BRINGS FRESH TERROIR TO SYDNEY’S HARBOUR

By Lifestyle Correspondent | The Sydney Times

SYDNEY HARBOUR — Tuesday 14 April 2026

The salt air of Darling Harbour was once again infused with the sophisticated bouquets of France’s finest vineyards as the Australian National Maritime Museum hosted the 2026 edition of "Tasting France." Organized by Business France, the national agency supporting the international development of the French economy, this year’s showcase served as a vital bridge between heritage estates and Sydney’s evolving palate.

With around 10 exhibitors in attendance, the event highlighted a strategic shift toward organic practices and "New Wave" varietals, reflecting a 2026 market that increasingly values sustainability alongside tradition. In spite of the recently signed European Trade Agreement which may result in lower Tarrifs and Excise duties on imported wines it was a smaller contingent of Producers that are in Australia this year compared to previous years which is not surprising considering the difficulties of travelling during the Gulf War,...nevertheless Franch Wine remains polular in Australia and the Exhibitors are offering some great wines. Today the exhibition moves to Intercontinental HOTEL RIALTO iff you are in the Trade or a Journalist .
