π― DSL BRISBANE SUPER LEAGUE SEASON 2 β WEEK 3 REVIEW π―
Week 3 delivered plenty of drama, a major shift at the top of the ladder, and a statement performance from a player who has suddenly launched himself into Finals Night contention.
There was also an unusual circumstance during the evening, with reigning champion Raymond Smith forced to withdraw from the night's action. Declan Bailey stepped in to ensure matches could still be played, but those results do not count towards the official standings. As per league rules, Smith's scheduled opponents, Braidon Charlton and Josh Kime, were awarded 7-0 victories.
With those adjustments applied, the ladder has a very different look heading into Week 4.
π MATHERS TAKES CONTROL
For the first time this season, Gordon Mathers sits on top of the Brisbane Super League ladder.
Mathers entered Week 3 chasing the unbeaten leaders and wasted no time making his move, defeating Robbie King 7-4 before backing it up with a 7-4 victory over James Bailey later in the evening.
The two wins move Mathers to 5 victories from 6 matches and, perhaps most impressively, an incredible +21 leg difference, comfortably the best record in the competition.
After three weeks, Mathers has transformed himself from a chaser into the man everyone else is trying to catch.
π₯ CHARLTON STAYS IN THE HUNT
Although his scheduled Stream Board clash with Raymond Smith was unable to proceed officially, Charlton was awarded a 7-0 victory and remains firmly in the title race.
The night became even more interesting when Charlton faced Tristan Bognar in Round 6. Bognar produced arguably the performance of the season so far, storming to a remarkable 7-2 victory while averaging over 92.
While the result doesn't majorly hurt Charlton's hopes, it serves as a reminder that nobody in this field can be taken lightly.
Charlton remains second on the ladder and very much in contention.
β BOGNAR'S BREAKTHROUGH CONTINUES
After opening the season with two losses, Tristan Bognar has become one of the form players of the competition.
Week 2 saw him upset Robbie King, and Week 3 saw him go one better.
First, Bognar dispatched James Bailey 7-2 before producing a sensational display against Charlton, winning 7-2 with a 92.33 average.
Those performances have propelled him into the top four and completely changed the outlook of his season.
Just two weeks ago he was anchored to the bottom of the ladder. Now he's sitting in a Finals Night position.
π KIME HOLDS HIS PLACE
Josh Kime was awarded a 7-0 victory following Smith's withdrawal and remains right in the mix for Finals Night qualification.
The qualifier continues to impress in his debut Super League campaign and currently sits level on wins with Bognar, separated only by leg difference.
With the middle of the table incredibly tight, every leg could prove crucial in the weeks ahead.
βοΈ KING AND RUNDLE SHARE THE SPOILS
Robbie King endured another difficult start to the night, falling 7-4 to Mathers, but responded with a dramatic 7-6 victory over Jamie Rundle in one of the closest matches of the evening.
Rundle also split his matches, recording a convincing 7-2 victory over Josh Kime before narrowly missing out against King.
Both players remain well within striking distance of the top four.
π BAILEY STILL SEARCHING
James Bailey's wait for a first official victory continues.
Losses to Bognar and Mathers leave him still looking for his breakthrough result, although his performances continue to be more competitive than the ladder suggests.
With eight matches remaining, one win could quickly change his fortunes.
