An Esperance region local has revealed the 40-million-year-old connection she and her husband share with a globally rare, prehistoric rock, which has become the centrepiece of their premium, adults-only cabin retreat.

Anna and Alex Martins are the owners of Box Hill Esperance, a luxury getaway on coastal countryside, which is home to a host of 60-million-year-old rock forms called spongolite.

Australia’s only Aboriginal-led wildflower festival is set to bloom in Esperance this weekend, offering visitors a glimpse into the history of the rugged coastlines and Recherche Archipelago — known locally as the Bay of Isles.

The Djilba Wildflower Festival is hosted by the Wudjari Nyungar people through the Esperance Tjaltjraak Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, with more than 700 different types of wildflowers on display from September 19 to 23.
