A skating and family fun festival on Esperance’s foreshore will celebrate its 10th year this Saturday and feature a record number of market stalls and skating entrants.

The Shire of Esperance’s Edge of the Bay began in 2016 as a skate competition to welcome the opening of the new skate park at Esperance’s youth precinct and has since grown into a jam-packed event featuring market stalls, activities, giveaways and more.

A farmer who died saving his beloved family farm from a bushfire has been identified as respected community member and Shire of Ravensthorpe deputy president Mark Mudie.

Mr Mudie was operating a front-end loader in a desperate attempt to establish a firebreak in West River, near Ravensthorpe, when it became engulfed in flames on Monday afternoon.

The collaboration between the Shire of Esperance and Australia’s Golden Outback has successfully boosted the region’s profile, prompting the council to extend the partnership.

At Tuesday’s council meeting, councillors voted 8-0 to extend its tourism partnership and financial assistance agreement with the tourism organisation to June 30, 2027.

Esperance’s State Emergency Service is set to receive $150,000 for facility upgrades and a new off-road ATV, enabling the group to improve its emergency response times.

The funds were promised in the State Government’s 2025-26 election commitments program and will enable the SES to replace its 2008 Polaris ATV with an upgraded off-road ATV worth $43,300.

Ensuring “once-in-a-generation” projects can be delivered while keeping costs low for residents is the main challenge of the Shire of Esperance’s latest budget, according to councillors.

The shire’s more than $50 million capital works program includes projects such as the James St cultural precinct and Myrup waste management facility, with $15.9m and $9.6m committed in the budget, respectively.

Ensuring “once-in-a-generation” projects can be delivered while keeping costs low for residents is the main challenge of the Shire of Esperance’s latest budget, according to councillors.
