This Just In From the Quantum Realm 🌀

In a plot twist that would make Star Trek's Scotty drop his sandwich, scientists have just pulled off what was once considered the ultimate "hold my beer" moment in quantum physics.

For the first time ever, researchers have achieved quantum teleportation over the internet. No, they're not beaming up your cat pictures (yet), but they have managed to instantly transfer information between quantum systems without physically moving anything - which is basically the quantum equivalent of sending a text message through a wormhole.

What does this mean for the future? We're looking at the birth of a quantum internet that promises ultra-secure communication and supercharged data processing. And while we're still in the early stages, this breakthrough is opening doors to technologies that even sci-fi writers haven't dreamed up yet.

The best part? Your data could soon be traveling faster than you can say "Why is my Wi-Fi so slow?" Just don't expect this to help with your video buffering issues... yet.

Dara and I presented to nearly 1,000 people at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre for Subway’s SubCon ‘25.

The theme was on AQ and adaptability, and one of my favourite lines from keynote is:

“If we want to change the story of the human race in the 21st century, we have to expand the range and types of stories we pay attention to.”

The knowledge and information we consume is how we make sense of the world. To be adaptable, you need to make sure your brain food nourishes you. If on the whole you have a healthy information diet, there is always room for one of their delicious chocolate cookies.

Some good news for your Friday afternoon 🚀

Over the last five years, Malaysia has seen a significant decline in child marriages - a 37% reduction from 1,467 cases in 2019 to 923 in 2023.

This progress reflects the impact of efforts from the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development (KPWKM) to address the root causes of child marriage. These initiatives include:

♥️ Policy and Legal Reforms: Amending relevant laws to protect children’s rights.
♥️ Awareness Programs: Educating communities through mass media and social platforms.
♥️ Reproductive Health Services: Providing youth-friendly reproductive health education.

These measures aim to empower young individuals, ensuring they have the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their futures.

While challenges remain, this downward trend is a strong testament to the positive change achievable through collective action and commitment.

Last week, Dara and I got 140 lawyers to play.

We explored the magic and neuroscience of what happens when we see adaptability at play, and helped them reimagine adaptability in the workplace.

In just 90-minutes we explored:

🔸Some incredible stories of human ingenuity
🔸Groundbreaking research from Harvard around change and our immunity to it.
🔸The power of improv when it comes to failure and collaboration.

And we even did some improv! Major Ivy League Universities like Warton, Stanford and Harvard are including humour and improv in their business programs. You can find "Applied Improv for Lawyers" at the University of Pittsburgh Law School, Ohio State and University of Washington

Improvisors are by and large the most adaptable people on the planet. They are constantly responding to evolving situations in real time with a sense of openness, curiosity and optimism.

The maxim's of improv are:

🔸 Being present
🔸 Actively listening
🔸 Embracing failure
🔸 Making your partner look good

This was a chance for participants to learn, laugh and lean into what it means to be more human at work and embrace an ever evolving industry. If you're looking to bring this kind of play, adaptability and human-centred learning to your workplace, let's chat!

The future belongs to those who can improvise, adapt, and have fun along the way.

We love science, and we love nerding-out.

It was an honour to be a part of CSIRO's Evolution event, to celebrate the pivotal role that research, when translated into deep tech, has on transformative innovations that can make a more sustainable and overall better future that we can all be proud of.

Australians punch way above their weight when it comes to technological innovation. Programs like this ensure that cutting-edge research gets a voice and hopefully a platform to bring great ideas to fruition.

You might be feeling like 2025 is off to a rough start - news of fires, floods, and uncertainty have been dominating the headlines. But just as you can choose what fuels your body, you can choose what fuels your mind.

In Oregon, local tribes have secured a multi-million dollar grant to bring sea otters back to the Pacific Northwest. As a keystone species, sea otters play a crucial role in restoring fragile underwater ecosystems by keeping sea urchin populations in check, allowing kelp forests to recover. The grant will support scientific research, socio-economic assessments, and site selection for their return.

Though the reintroduction won’t happen overnight, with otters typically having just one pup a year, with the right planning and support advocates hope to accelerate the process, potentially seeing them back within the next decade.

Remember that 2013 movie "Her," where Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with an AI operating system? Well, here we are in 2025, and while we're not quite dating our smartphones or whispering sweet nothings to Scarlett Johansson-voiced operating systems (well, maybe some of us are), the film's vision of human-AI convergence feels less like science fiction and more like tomorrow's headline.

AI is undeniably a part of our daily lives — shaping how we live, work and play.

Are we adapting to this future as thoughtfully as we should be, or are we just along for the ride?

Our most recent newsletter deep dives into the Convergence Effect: the technological equivalent of a collaborative jazz session where AI, robotics, IoT, and human creativity are all improvising together, creating something entirely new.

It's not just about the tools anymore; it's about how they dance together, and more importantly, how we lead the dance.

The leaders of tomorrow won’t just be tech-savvy or data-driven; they’ll be skilled at playing in the space where human and machine intelligence meet. They’ll ask questions machines can’t: What if? Why not? What’s next?

Why does this matter for your organisation?

Adaptability is your lifeline in this era of exponential change. It’s the skill that will allow you to navigate the choppy waters of transformation and thrive in this time of what we consider is combinatorial change.

Great ideas alone don’t change the world - proper ex*****on does.

Too often, ground-breaking research gets lost in the dusty footnotes of academia and industry silos. Brilliant discoveries remain untapped because the gap between knowledge and action is often too wide.

Science, at its core, is built for adaptation - it constantly evolves. One piece of contrary evidence and we rethink everything, that’s what makes so science powerful.

But to turn research into real-world impact, we need:

1. Collaboration: breakthroughs don’t happen in isolation.
2. Adaptability: what worked yesterday won’t shape tomorrow.
3. A mindset built for change: innovation isn’t just about discovery; it’s what you do with it that counts.

This February, Tane speaks at CSIRO’s flagship event, uniting Australia’s top deep tech researchers and industry leaders. Together, we’re not just learning and sharing - we’re building a future where science fuels real change, one we can all be proud of.

We'll explore what it takes to succeed in unpredictable environments, and how to harness the new competitive advantage in a world of constant change.

As scientists, we trust data, evidence, and logic - not Mercury in retrograde.

But we also don't let the facts get in the way of a well-timed story.

January 29th marked the start of the Lunar New Year. The Year of the Yin Wood Snake - a symbol of transformation, strategy and adaptability.

Wood Snakes don’t rush. They shed what no longer serves them, move with intention and embrace continuous growth.

Chinese astrologers predict this year will favour:
✅ Strategic thinking over impulsive action.
✅ Transformation over stagnation.
✅ Long-term vision over short-term fixes.

Surviving in business isn’t about working harder, but shedding old ways and adapting fast.

The best companies don’t just grow. Like snakes, they shed their skin to stay relevant and make progress.
