What happens when we automate the struggle out of learning? 📚

Research is beginning to reveal a complicated relationship between AI, cognitive effort and the way our brains actually learn. In some cases, offloading the hard work may be costing us the very process that builds memory, critical thinking and understanding.

But that doesn’t mean AI is the problem.

A remarkable study involving 800 teenagers in Nigeria found that students using AI with structured human guidance achieved significant learning gains. The difference? The technology didn’t simply remove the effort. Teachers decided where that effort should go.

Our latest newsletter explores a deceptively simple idea: sometimes the friction we’re so eager to automate away is where the learning was happening all along.

The Effort Was the Learning.

As AI becomes more capable, the qualities that make us human become the deciding factor. Curiosity. Judgement. Empathy. Adaptability. The capacity to lead, connect and make wise decisions.

In this clip from the Well Workplaces Podcast podcast, Tāne explores the paradox of artificial intelligence: the more capable our technology becomes, the more human we need to be.

And if we can get that balance right, AI won’t define our future. We will.

In Episode 75 of the Limitless Leaders Podcast, co-authors Tāne and Dara joined for a conversation about leadership, adaptability, and the human capabilities that matter most in a rapidly changing world.

One of the core ideas behind Full Stack Human is that play and hope work together. Play helps us imagine new possibilities. Hope gives us the courage to act on them.

As Tāne puts it -
“Hope transforms playful possibility into purpose-driven action… play combined with hope? That’s where the transformation lives. That’s the secret sauce.” 🫟
