4ZZZ 4ZZZ is Queensland’s longest running FM radio station. Mostly, we are passionate about Brisbane and the things happening in our city.
(726)

As a not-for-profit community broadcaster, we have been reliably pumping out alternative music, news and culture since we began as the official student radio at the University of Queensland in 1975. Four and a half decades and plenty of history later, we’re broadcasting from Barry Parade in Fortitude Valley, connecting and amplifying the voices of our community across south-east Queensland and str

eaming throughout the world. Whether it's music, arts, LGBTQIA+, First Nations or local issues, we endeavour to empower local communities through community broadcasting. We are run by a small team of paid and volunteer staff, governed by the 4ZZZ Board of Directors and like many community radio stations, powered by volunteers. From the voices you hear on the radio, to the people who process your CDs or run events with our name on it, everyone at 4ZZZ loves what they do. You’ll hear it when you tune into 102.1FM or listen to our digital channel Zed Digital on your DAB radio, both available to stream online.

Zedheads! I am so excited for today's show, I am lucky enough to be bringing you a recording of a keynote by Dr Emmy Rākete (Ngāpuhi), co-founder and spokesperson of People Against Prisons Aotearoa (PAPA) and critical Marxist scholar at University of Auckland, whose work bridges activism and academia and is grounded in struggles for liberation for incarcerated Māori and q***r people. (See links below to find out more about Emmy's work, and about PAPA).

This keynote was part of an event called ‘Organising for Prison Abolition’ held back in June at Trades Hall in Naarm, hosted by Flatout, People Against Prisons Aotearoa (PAPA), and Dr Emma Russell as part of her 'Reconceptualizing Risk' ARC DECRA research project.

Dr Emmy Rākete's keynote - which was, rare for an academic talk, both academically brilliant and genuinely funny - asked why movements for police and prison abolition (and, indeed, the room at Trades Hall!) are so full of q***r people. She also dug into the formation of People Against Prisons Aotearoa (PAPA), the historical development of prisons in relation to capitalism, importance of class struggle, and what the work of collective liberation asks of us.

So tune in from 9-10am on 4ZZZ for this brilliant speech, and plenty of new and local music, or catch up later on demand at the 4ZZZ website (and subscribe to the Radio Reversal Podcast on whatever podcast app you use!)

🥁AOTW | Selve - Breaking Into Heaven 🥁
From the AOTW Committee - “It’s been quite a journey for local funsters since their Pink Hotel forays, and 4ZZZ has been along for the ride. Latest album ‘Breaking Into Heaven’ has already been a hit at the station, with the title track having topped our weekly Top 20. The LP was aptly recorded at Abbey Road, a studio synonymous with musical adventures. Heavenly.”
