In an extraordinary show of support, Raiders coach Ricky Stuart is tipping "Laurie Daley-like" sensation Ethan Strange to represent Australia this year and NSW in the 2026 State of Origin series.

The call comes after Strange's stunning hat-trick that led Canberra to a 28-12 victory over Manly last night.

"He's got qualities of a representative player already as a young person, and I don't say that outlandishly," Stuart said.

This week’s Canberra Raiders home match is a special one for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander winger Xavier Savage.

The clash against the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at GIO Stadium Canberra on Friday 8 August takes place during Indigenous round.

The match comes just two days after a documentary, Kulpiyam: The Xavier Savage Story dropped on Fox League and Kayo Sports. It focuses on Savage leaving his home in North Queensland to chase a dream in the nation’s capital.

It is also a special time for Sebastian Kris with the jersey depicting the Torres Strait Islander totems of Kris’ tribe; the Wagadagam and Panay peoples, with the front of the jersey displaying a shovel nose shark, dugong, crocodile and a snake.

Leeches, worms and Giardia parasites described as “very adorable” make up just part of the parasite zoo at ANU. They're inviting the public in for National Science Week to explore the fascinating world of parasites and the scientists who love them.

There’s a parasite zoo at ANU Research School of Biology that must be seen to be believed during feeding time, when petri dishes are filled with human blood for leeches and agar jelly is set for roundworms.

Former Canberra Raiders star Sam Backo has passed away in a Cairns hospital at the age of 64, following a three-month battle with the tropical soil disease melioidosis. The Queensland and Australia representative is being remembered for his toughness on the field, as well as his generous spirit and humility.

ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys paid tribute to Backo – the man and the footballer.

“Sam was as tough as they come, a larger-than-life character who was as recognisable as he was resilient,” V’landys said in a statement.

“Through a successful career with Canberra Raiders, Brisbane Broncos, not to mention Queensland and Australia, he was a one-of-a-kind footballer.

“A member of the Indigenous Team of the Century, Sam was also a generous and selfless man who was passionate about Indigenous health and advocacy away from the field.”
