For over 20 years, Forest Hill craftsman John Lowther has been quietly turning timber into beautiful, intricate bobbins — the delicate tools used in lace-making. 🪡🌳
John’s journey began later in life, sparked by a simple article that inspired him to learn woodturning at Ipswich TAFE. What started as a challenge soon became a passion. 🔨✨
“I never drank, never swam, didn’t do a lot of fishing,” John says. “But this gave me something positive to do every day. At the end of the day, I could look back and say, ‘Today you made six bobbins.’ Or maybe just one. But you did something.” 💪🪵
Though fewer people are making lace these days, and demand for handcrafted bobbins has slowed, John still enjoys crafting custom tools — adapting them to suit aging hands and keeping the art alive in his own way. 🧵❤️
In a fast-paced world, John’s quiet workshop is a reminder of the beauty of craftsmanship, dedication, and purpose. 🕰️🎨
