Doug Parkinson passed away earlier this week.

Melbourne's Herald Sun hailed him “Australia’s Greatest Singer" and The Australian labelled him “A Rolled Gold Superstar”.

For us, he was a rock superstar with a string of hits including "Dear Prudence", "I’ll Be Around" recorded with Tommy Emmanuel, "Without You" and "Everlasting Love" featuring Ayers Rock as the backing band.

Doug was a show-topping icon of the stage performing in award winning musical theatre roles in everything from rock in TOMMY to stage spectaculars JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and GREASE, THE WIZARD OF OZ and BUDDY THE MUSICAL.

This week on Behind The Music, we air an archival interview with him. It's heard on The Pulse (Geelong) and throughout the Community Radio Network.

AFTER THREE YEARS on 94.7 The Pulse (Geelong), Behind The Music is taking a self-imposed break till next year. So this week's show is pretty special. (See details below.)

The Community Radio Network will air BTM repeats throughout July before switching to our sister program, 45RPM, in August. (https://www.facebook.com/45rpmradioprogram/)

So thank you for your friendship, support and messages. It has been a lot of fun sharing some of the interviews I've recorded recently, plus over the years.

THIS WEEK: MIDNIGHT OIL - RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET

FROM the northern beaches of Sydney to the streets of Manhattan, Midnight Oil has stopped traffic, inflamed passions, inspired fans, challenged the concepts of “business as usual” and broken new ground.

This week Behind The Music airs an archival interview with lead singer Peter Garrett recorded in October 1984 - the week "Red Sails In the Sunset" was released.

Peter tracks through songs from the album and talks about the band's incredible career.

(Pulse listeners will also hear an hour of highlights from the Monterey International Pop Festival from 50 years ago. In the program, we'll hear from John Phillips and Grace Slick.)

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE career...

The Rolling Stones have recorded 30 studio albums, 21 live projects, 29 compilations, and more than 100 singles.

This week, we chat with Mick Jagger in a show we're calling "From Blues To Exile". Jagger speaks about the group's early blues songs and dispels the myths and mysteries surrounding "Exile On Main Street".

And as a special bonus, a song from the Stone's new album "Blue & Lonesome"! Don't miss this one!

WITH THE BENEFIT of nearly 40 years hindsight and more than 45 million sales of the band’s albums across the globe, it’s easy to dismiss the first INXS projects as being “competent”, though “unremarkable” new wave pop.

Yet even in the early days when the guys were making their first demos for the ABC, INXS had the confident swagger, gritty integrity and sheer work ethic necessary to make a mark on the world’s stage.

In this archival interview, INXS talks about the Deluxe Years on Behind The Music.

RAY BURGESS shot to the top of Australia’s pop music scene in the mid 70s following an appearance on 'New Faces'.

The show was the 70s launching pad for many acts just as 'The Voice' is today.

His singing career produced several hits including 'Touch Me', 'Love Fever', 'Sad Rock And Roll' and 'Gloria'.

As well as guesting on various TV shows like 'Countdown', Graham Kennedy’s 'In Melbourne Tonight', 'Bandstand' with Brian Henderson, and the game shows 'Celebrity Squares' and 'Blankety Blanks', Ray had a parallel career as a television host presenting 'Rock N Roll Circus' for the 0-10 network, and 'Flashez' for ABC TV. He also filled in for Johnny Young on 'Young Talent Time'.

Ray’s our special guest this week on Behind The Music.
