Did you know Billy Corgan wasn't the original plan for this classic moment from "Homerpalooza?"
Everyone remembers the exchange; "Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins. Homer Simpson, smiling politely", but writer Brent Forrester had another musician in mind when he wrote the scene.
Discussing the episode on our Four Finger Discount podcast, Forrester reveals, "I had written the part for Courtney Love. In the original draft, there's a different joke there."
Originally, Courtney Love and Hole were asked to guest star in the episode, but they declined. According to the DVD commentary, an unnamed group (later revealed by Entertainment Weekly to be Sonic Youth) said that they would refuse to appear in the episode if Courtney Love was involved.
Forrester explains how the scene would have gone had Courtney appeared.
"When Courtney Love was in the episode, she walks up to Homer and she says 'Homer, I saw your act! Courtney Love'," explains Forrester. "Then Homer says, 'Homer, grateful'".
Honestly, I think the Corgan gag works better, but it's still interesting to hear these behind the scenes stories on beloved Simpsons episodes.
