Here’s what I would tell myself 12 months ago 👇

As a self-confessed introvert, I absolutely love working for myself as a freelance small business owner, and can happily go days without seeing another soul.

But I also need to be honest and admit that some of the best things that have happened in my business started from real conversations.

It’s probably not great for my mental health, either 😅

So when I get a bit down because I’m comparing myself to others, I need to remind myself that you get back what you put out there - both online AND offline.

In 2026 I’ll be focusing more on starting conversations, and saying yes to the scary things. And I encourage you to do the same.

If you’re feeling stuck, start small.

Talk to your followers, talk to your peers and don’t be afraid to reach out to others (The Business Social and Meet Cute Social Club are amazing starting points if you’re based in Geraldton!).

The best kind of growth is relational, and it starts with us taking charge and saying hi first 🌿

What’s something you would tell yourself 12 months ago? Leave a comment and let’s chat! 😜

Have you ever noticed that 99 good things can happen, but we only ever seem to focus on the one bad thing? Humans are wired to latch onto the negatives, and ooooh boy, don’t us marketing and comms folks know it.

From news to politics and even entertainment, negative hooks are everywhere. And honestly? It sucks.

A negative hook is when a post grabs your attention by triggering fear, shame, or outrage. Think lines like “You’re doing this wrong” or “This is why your content flopped.”

They work because they spark emotion and controversy gets clicks. But they do it by hijacking curiosity through shame.

No shade to anyone using them (I’ve used a few myself at my own expense!), but it’s worth being mindful of what kind of audience you want to attract.

Do you want people to brace for criticism when you pop up in their feed, or do you want to build trust and connection?

The choice is yours.

Have you ever fallen for a negative hook? Or written one yourself? Be honest.

It’s so easy to treat our business’ social media like another job to get done. Post, tick, move on.

But we’ve fallen into a trap. We treat our feed like a noticeboard, plastering up announcements and walking away.

But engagement doesn’t work like that 🙊

It’s not about what we stick up, it’s about the waves we create when we actually talk to people.

So, take the time to start a conversation. Reply to comments… and leave authentic ones for others!

It’s the first step to building trust with our audience, and forming a genuine community. Because without a real connection, our content is just another drop in the ocean 💙

The next round starts Monday, so now’s the perfect time to jump in 🫶

I broke the golden rule of communications - I got too caught up in my excitement that I forgot to meet people where they were at. I jammed my social media strategy webinar full of stats and jargon, not keeping in mind that it was a session for beginners.

It’s such an easy trap to fall into, especially when you live and breathe your business. But the average joe does not have the same passion or knowledge that we do, so we need to keep things simple.

Have you ever slipped up like this?
