For years, the idea behind the Australian Rhino Project was to establish an insurance population of rhinos on Australian soil, a hedge against the species disappearing from the wild altogether. That plan has now been shelved, and in its place, the organisation has committed AUD $840,000 directly to seven conservation projects working in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, where the threat to rhinos is immediate and ongoing.

A new one-day route through one of Central Otago's wildest stretches of river is about to change how riders experience the region, adding a rugged, high-country test to a network of trails already considered among New Zealand's best.

The Kawarau Gorge Trail opens on Sunday 25 October 2026, New Zealand's Labour Weekend, and Adventure South NZ has moved quickly to build it into four multi-day cycling itineraries.
