🇳🇿 Should Te Reo Māori Be Compulsory in Every Primary School?

The debate over te reo Māori in New Zealand classrooms is back in the spotlight following recent education law changes.

While the Government has changed some of the legal obligations around Te Tiriti o Waitangi in school governance, te reo Māori is still not a compulsory subject for every primary school student. Many schools choose to teach it, while others offer varying levels of Māori language and cultural learning.

This has reignited a long-running national conversation.

Supporters believe making te reo Māori compulsory would help protect one of New Zealand’s three official languages, strengthen national identity, and ensure every child gains a greater understanding of the country’s unique history and culture.

Others argue that schools should focus first on improving literacy, numeracy, and science outcomes, and that parents and individual schools should have greater freedom to decide what additional subjects are taught.

It’s a discussion that goes beyond politics. It touches on culture, identity, education, and what it means to grow up in Aotearoa New Zealand.

There is no single right answer, but respectful debate is an important part of democracy.

What do you think? Should te reo Māori be compulsory in every New Zealand primary school, or should it remain a choice for schools and families? Share your thoughts below and keep the discussion respectful.

🇳🇿 Jacinda Ardern Closes Another New Zealand Chapter – What Do You Think?

Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has officially listed her Auckland home for sale, marking another milestone following her family’s move to Sydney, Australia.

Ardern stepped down as Prime Minister in early 2023, saying she no longer had “enough in the tank” to continue in the role. Since then, she has taken on international leadership and academic roles, spending time in the United States before relocating to Sydney with her partner, Clarke Gayford, and their daughter, Neve.

Their renovated Auckland home is now on the market, signalling that the family’s next chapter is firmly based across the Tasman.

For many New Zealanders, Jacinda Ardern remains one of the country’s most recognised and debated political figures. Supporters praise her leadership during major crises, while critics continue to question aspects of her government’s legacy. Regardless of where you stand, there’s little doubt she has left a lasting mark on New Zealand’s history.

Now that she has relocated to Australia, do you think this is simply the next step in her family’s journey, or should former Prime Ministers continue living in the country they once led?

We’d love to hear your respectful thoughts in the comments.
