TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

Severe Weather Warning
for HEAVY RAINFALL
For people in Mid North Coast, Illawarra and parts of Hunter, Metropolitan, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains and Northern Tablelands Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:28 pm Thursday, 22 May 2025.

Heavy rainfall to ease over the Mid North Coast overnight, but will develop over parts of the Great Dividing Range during this evening and continue into Friday.

Weather Situation: A coastal trough in the Mid North Coast continues to drift to the south this evening. A persistent and very moist onshore flow to the south of this trough is causing widespread areas of rain, with heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms. Conditions across the Mid North Coast are finally expected to ease during Thursday night, with the focus of the rainfall shifting to parts of the southern Hunter, Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands. During Friday morning heavy rainfall will extend further south to the Southern Tablelands and inland parts of the South Coast.

For the MID NORTH COAST AND ADJACENT NORTHERN TABLELANDS AND HUNTER: Moderate rainfall with isolated areas of HEAVY RAINFALL leading to FLASH FLOODING is ongoing, and is forecast to ease by around midnight. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 60 and 100 mm are likely.

For PARTS OF THE GREAT DIVIDING RANGE FROM THE SOUTHERN HUNTER TO AROUND BEGA: Ongoing moderate rainfall is expected to become HEAVY RAINFALL leading to FLASH FLOODING north of Goulburn from late this evening, before extending further south along the ranges to around Bega during Friday morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals of 60 to 90 mm are possible with 24-hourly totals between 100 and 150 mm.

Rainfall is expected to ease gradually through central parts of the state later Friday evening, before easing over the southeast during Saturday morning.

A Flood Watch and various Flood Warnings are current for multiple catchments. A Damaging Surf Warning is also current for coastal areas of the Mid North Coast. Please refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/

Locations which may be affected include Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Taree, Kempsey, Bowral, Braidwood, Bega, Katoomba, Goulburn, Woolgoolga, Sawtell and Dorrigo.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
* After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEST Thursday.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Sussan Ley defeats Angus Taylor to become new Liberal leader

Sussan Ley has won the Liberal leadership challenge against Angus Taylor following a party room ballot this morning.

Ley will become the first woman to lead the Liberal Party in its 81-year history after defeating Angus Taylor - the Member for Hume.

Ley, who was deputy leader under Peter Dutton during the last parliamentary term, narrowly won against Taylor by 29 votes to 25.

Queenslander Ted O'Brien (51) has been elected Ley's deputy. He defeated Phil Thompson 38 votes to 16.

Ley has held the southern NSW regional seat of Farrer since 2001.

THE HON ANGUS TAYLOR MP
MEMBER FOR HUME

Friday 9 May 2025

STATEMENT ON THE LIBERAL PARTY LEADERSHIP

Today, I am announcing my candidacy for the leadership of the Liberal Party.

This is not a decision I’ve taken lightly but it is one I’ve taken with conviction following discussions with many of my colleagues this week.

Our party is at a crossroads. After the result on Saturday, we owe it to our members, our supporters, and the millions of Australians who believe in our cause to regroup, rebuild, and get back in the fight.

We must unify our party, rebuild its foundations and take up the fight to Labor.

We must restore the Party around the values that make us strong:
sound economic management and personal responsibility;
national security;
aspiration and reward for effort; and
a vibrant private sector that creates jobs and opportunity.

These values are the bedrock of Australia’s prosperity and the Liberal Party’s success.

But this is not just about values. It’s about delivering results and that starts with deep renewal.

We need policies that speak to Australians across all walks of life.

We need real ideas that match the scale of the challenges we face. From housing and energy to the cost-of-living and national defence.

We need to show the country that we’re serious about aspiration, opportunity, and backing Australians to get ahead.

But policy isn’t enough. We also need to rebuild the Party itself.

We must bring in new talent that reflects modern Australia – especially more women.

We must operate like a campaign every day – with strong candidates, clearer messages, smarter strategies, and greater fundraising.

We need to modernise our organisation from the ground up and back our volunteers and members who give so much to our cause.

None of this will be easy. Reform never is. But the road to government begins with doing the hard things now, not later.

I will provide leadership that unites our party, that puts our cause above sectional interests and that reaches beyond our base and earns the trust of the voters that we’ve lost.

I’ve always shown up when it matters most.

In my career, I’ve helped rebuild organisations and created successful businesses in the private sector.

In government, I worked to unite our Coalition behind energy and climate policies, securing the future of Australia's medical manufacturing capability and delivering jobs, opportunities and homes in our cities including western Sydney.

In opposition, I’ve been on the front line of economic debates, been prepared to do the tough interviews and to be a flag bearer for the team.

I know what it takes to lead a team, to craft a message, and to deliver real outcomes.

This moment demands experience. It also demands energy, humility, and a clear plan for the future.

We must offer Australians something more than opposition.

And that means being ready – not just to hold Labor to account, but to show that we’re fit to govern again.

We live in the best country in the world but for too many Australians right now, it doesn’t feel that way. They’re doing it tough. They’re uncertain. They want a government that understands them.

We must become that alternative.

This is about the future of the Liberal Party.

It’s about the people who vote for us, volunteer for us, and rely on us.

And it’s about the Australians who want to believe in us again.

I’m standing for leader because I bring the skills, experience and qualities required to bring our team together, to regroup, rebuild, and get back in the fight.

School Zones back in force from Monday

Motorists are reminded to slow down and remain vigilant with school zones back in force from Monday 28 April, as Term 2 commences in NSW.

40km/h school zones are generally in place from 8.00am to 9.30am and from 2.30pm to 4.00pm, and although Monday is a teacher development day at some schools, some students will return to school tomorrow.

Drivers who disobey road rules in school zones face high penalties and risk losing their licence.
