It's easy to make your own content!
Welcome to Weddin Shire Youth Yarn! This is your guide to recording, saving, and sending your interviews, creative work, or other sound bytes to our team so that we can include it in our community podcast.
Some ideas for your recording can include, but are certainly not limited to:
• Showcase the experiences of you and others in the community, or further afield
• Talk about your clubs or organisations to encourage others to join
• Collect stories from family and friends
• Get out and about, talk about nature!
• Tell jokes, or share brain teasers and riddles
• Read your creative writing aloud
• Discuss your interests and hobbies
The first step is to think about your idea for your recording, and write it down.
Keep a copy with you on the day you are going to record. Sometimes people respond well to spur of the moment questions, some prefer a written list and a few moments to prepare. This is why having a written copy of your script is important.
Make sure you have a media consent form! The recordings will be published and available for the public to listen to, so it is vital that anyone on your recording (you too!) signs a media release form. These should be scanned and sent to [email protected], or sent in the mail to Youth Yarn, 97 Main Street, Grenfell NSW 2810.
How do I record responses, stories, or creative pieces?
Easy!
Does your device have a voice recording app?
First, record yourself or someone else asking your questions individually, then save them with the question number and speaker’s name in order to help the editing process run smoothly.
An example would be to record yourself saying “Question One: Where is your favourite place to visit’?” and save the file as Q1-YourName
When you are out and about interviewing, the easiest way to gather responses is to ask your question, and only record when the respondent is ready to answer. Count them in, press record, and they can say their piece.
If the interviewee isn’t happy with their answer- for instance if they muddle their words or there’s a loud interruption in the background, simply delete that file and start again. When you are both happy with the response, you can save the file in this format:
Q1-A-JohnSmith
(Question number, A for Answer, and the name of the person giving the answer).
Things to keep in mind when recording:
Find a quiet place to conduct your interview.
A little bit of background noise is okay, but try to keep it to a minimum. If your interview is taking place somewhere there is traffic or lots of background conversation, just make sure the person speaking is as close as they can reasonably be to the recording device.
Try to avoid recording near sources of white noise such as air conditioners or computer towers- anything that emits an electrical hum.
You can find the media consent form at the link below.
We look forward to hearing your interviews and creative pieces!
