Have you really thought about the takeaway paper cups you drink your coffee or tea out of?

When you really think about it, if paper gets in contact with water it gets wet, soggy and you can’t use it right?

So why can we drink hot liquid from it and the cup doesn’t change shape? It’s because of the
polyethylene that is lined inside the paper cup. This is a type of plastic that can’t be recycled and this is slowly leeching toxic chemicals into our body.

We have an illusion that they are better for the environment and for us than plastic cups but that is not the case.

Paper cups are not eco friendly or safe for us and here’s why:

~ They are disposable and cannot be recycled

Once they are contaminated with food or drink they can’t ever be recycled. And while they are in landfill trying to break down they release toxic chemicals in the air and water which can effect us and wildlife.

~ Leads into a lifetime intake of micro plastics

When you heat up polyethylene with hot liquid, it leeches harmful chemicals in your drink. Polyethylene can release hormone disruptors that can wreak havoc on your endocrine system.

What is the solution?

Drink your coffee or tea in a porcelain or glass cup when you can. And when your out and about invest in a keep cup. They can be purchased pretty much anywhere and your barista will be happy to fill it up for you. And it might just taste better too x
