Taboo Topics Part 3

Ep 23 - Discussing child to parent aggression - when frustration and dysregulation becomes violence with Lee Tempest of VisAble

TW: child to parent violence, intimate partner violence, su***de ideation, self harm

In this next episode in our Taboo Topics series, we discuss the realities of child to parent violence, its prevalence amongst children with neurodivergence and its impact.

Let’s start by being clear, a child who is neurodivergent is not automatically violent or aggressive, but some are. And it’s parents and siblings who are often impacted by this violence.

So how does it happen? We talk about what it looks and feels like using lived experience.

For those experiencing child to parent violence, you are not alone. We will also share any agencies that you may be able to speak to.

This won’t be an easy episode, but it’s a very important one..

I encourage you to take some time to listen but also to process afterwards and to be kind to yourself for any feelings or fears that may emerge. Don't forget, there's always our Parenting Peer Support Group on Facebook if you want to chat or share!

It's not fair for our children to need to try multiple school types to find one that they can exist in, it's time our education system was analysed to make it equitable for all.

Special assistance schools are experiencing growing demand as traditional classrooms fall short of meeting the needs of neurodivergent students.

Join us by endorsing our response to Thriving Kids

On 20 August 2025, Minister Butler announced the Thriving Kids initiative, shifting children with disability, developmental delay, neurodivergence, and developmental vulnerabilities out of the NDIS into a $2 billion “foundational supports” program.

While ambitious, Reimagine along with many other advocates, peak bodies, parents, carers, and practitioners are concerned the proposal risks harm: it was not co-designed with families or practitioners, it underfunds the scale of need, and it places children into systems that are already failing.

Reimagine Australia has released our collective response: “First, We Build It” — a call to pause, co-design, and rebuild early childhood supports in ways that are inclusive, safe, and grounded in human rights and disability justice.

You can read our DRAFT Position Statement; First, We Build It here:https://reimagine.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/DRAFT-First-We-Build-It.pdf

We are inviting families, practitioners, organisations, and allies to endorse this statement. Endorsements will be included in our submission to the Minister, amplifying our united call for restorative reform.

If you share our concerns and vision, please take a moment to complete this form. By endorsing the statement, you add your voice to a growing coalition calling for reform that is co-designed, inclusive, and grounded in justice. Whether you are a parent, professional, community leader, or ally — your support matters.

Add your details here, by COB Friday 22 August, 2025, to become a co-signatory: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc8Hh9W6eknDT6tR7SiJ9WXaYNUn3zmYuoHyhO1-RFisitPdg/viewform

We have a short window of opportunity to make an impact, so please share this information widely amongst any networks you have across early childhood.

Ep 22 - Rethinking supports, services and how we select them with David Trembath

The world of supports for our neurodivergent child can feel huge and overwhelming. Who does what? How can they help? How often should my child see them? How many supports are too many supports?

We want to do the best for our children, but is providing EVERY support the right answer? And can informal supports also have a place in helping your child?

We chat to David Trembath of CliniKids , the clinical service of The Kids Research Institute Australia, about how to put your child at the centre of these decisions so you can be neuroaffirming, supportive and help your child be the best they can be.

I can’t say this doesn’t make me nervous…

Children with autism or development delays will be moved off the NDIS and into a new program called Thriving Kids, the federal health minister has announced.

It comes after a surge in young people using the NDIS when it is not the right fit for them, Mark Butler says.

Is your child affected by the changes? We want to hear from you.

Ep 21 - What is Stepping Stones by Triple P? And how can it help? with Prof Matt Sanders

Triple P - Positive Parenting Program recently launched Stepping Stone, a program specifically designed to
help parents and carers who’s children have additional support needs. So what is Triple P and, most importantly, what is Stepping Stones? And how can it help?

Triple P was created in Australia to empower parents to raise an incredible next generation of children. It’s now available in over 30 countries across the world and has seen incredible success.

But when your parenting has to look a little different, can Triple P help? We learn a whole suite of skills that are specific to our neurodivergent child, so a program developed for parenting neurotypical children is not likely to provide the correct fit. And that’s why they’ve just launched Stepping Stones.

We chat to its creator Professor Matt Sanders about how and why they created Stepping Stones, how it’s different and how it can help.

How early can we support children who might have autism?

"What happens if we listen to parents at that six to 18 months of age when they know their baby's developing differently? And provided a therapy support that helps babies learn in the way that's best for them. Not the way that's the best for everyone else.”

Andrew Whitehouse says getting a diagnosis or help for your child with autism used to be like ‘the wild west’. After the professor helped write the national guidelines in 2018, the world of autism assessment in Australia has radically changed.

Now parts of Australia are also running early intervention programs for babies as young as young as six months who are showing early differences in their social and communication skills.

Taboo Topics Part 2

Ep 20 - Neurodivergence and common comorbidities with Leah Heale

So I'll be honest, this one was A LOT to process. As many of you know, I'm a mother to three neurodivergent children and listening to the statistics around impacts to their physical and mental health because of the world they live in and they bodies and brains they have was HARD!

On today's episode Leah and I discussed the most commonly co occurring conditions for our neurodivergent children - what they are, how they appear and how to spot them. Covering both mental and physical health conditions, this can and did seem daunting and overwhelming but, as they say, forewarned is forearmed, and, in Leah's own words, understanding these conditions helps us change the statistics and management for our children and those in the future.

Leah talks to us not only from her experience running Heale Collab, but also from her own lived experience and shares some incredible knowledge that we can bring into our observation of our own children.

I encourage you to take some time to listen but also to process afterwards and to be kind to yourself for any feelings or fears that may emerge. Don't forget, there's always our Parenting Peer Support Group on Facebook if you want to chat or share!
