2026 AMBA BEST ANZ BARBER COLLECTION - JUNIOR

Winner - Lauren Thompson, ESQ Male Grooming Lauren Thomson

Collection name: Rebel Without A Cause!

My collection is called Rebel Without a Cause! Paying homage to the 50’s greaser era; think James Dean, deliberate
messiness, the ease and unconscious expectation to always be looking devilishly handsome and rugged, but
effortlessly.
When the new era calls to “I woke up like this” these icons were putting in the work that made it look easy. The
rebelliousness of staying out late, riding in cars with boys, smoking ci******es and having an outlawed
independence.
Against all odds we made ourselves look tough, untouchable and yet starting trends no one asked for that would
follow for decades. Leather, plain white tees’ , cuffed jeans and maybe even a little bit of bumper grease. Pair this with post war stylings where carrying combs and styling gels were a staple either in hand or home. To bring this collection into the 21st century, a blend of contemporary barbering and hairdressing techniques such as fading, intricate scissor work and the use of a feather razor were all incorporated to give these styles a modern edge.

This is a classic feel of nostalgia and long time kept memories taken from your parents Polaroid camera, developed
into these timeless pieces we might find laying around in an old photo album. A new time of life but never forgotten.

💭 Minoxidil — you’ve heard of it, but how does it actually work?

One of the most recognised treatments for hair loss, minoxidil is also one of the most misunderstood.

In the latest issue of Mocha Barber, Certified Trichologist Sally Adamson breaks down the science behind minoxidil — how it supports hair growth, when it can be effective, the all-important “dread shed”, and why correct diagnosis and consistency matter.

A must-read for barbers wanting to better understand hair loss and confidently support conversations with clients. 💈

2026 AMBA WINNERS INSPO

Name of Collection: Echoes of Texture

Inspiration –

Inspired by black-and-white photography, Echoes of Texture explores contrast, movement, and clean, deliberate lines. Rooted in Melbourne’s street culture, it celebrates individuality, identity, and the textures that shape our community. Minimal yet expressive, the collection blends hair, fashion, and self-expression into a modern reinterpretation of classic men’s barbershop portraits.

Best ANZ Barber Collection – Freestyle
Winner Lorenzo Manuele

Chromatic Form -
The inspiration behind this collection was to present barbering work with clarity, allowing each haircut to be assessed accurately and without distraction. Before the shoot, consideration was given to how colour contrast could be used as a practical tool rather than a stylistic choice. Using the colour wheel as reference, backgrounds and wardrobe were selected to separate the hair from its surroundings, ensuring the structure, balance, and finish of each haircut were clearly visible in a studio setting.

Colour was applied deliberately to support the work. Warm and cool tones were balanced to help define shape and improve visibility, while avoiding elements that could interfere with the haircut itself. This approach allowed the haircuts to be read quickly and clearly, supporting fair assessment and meeting competition judging standards while remaining contemporary.
During the shoot, the focus remained on control and consistency. Lighting was kept simple and uniform across the images to present the haircuts honestly. This ensured that shape, graduation, and surface texture were shown accurately, without shadows or highlights altering the appearance of the work. The aim was to prioritise accuracy over visual effect.
Styling and posing were kept minimal, with models positioned to show the haircut from its strongest and clearest angles. Movement and expression were limited so attention stayed on the technical ex*****on, allowing each haircut to appear balanced and well-constructed for judging.

The final images were refined through multiple reshoots and edits. Small adjustments to angle, lighting, and colour balance were made to improve how the haircuts translated in still form. Each version was reviewed to improve consistency and clarity. The final collection reflects both the finished haircuts and the level of control and attention required to present barbering work in a competitive environment.
