Tasmanian shipbuilder Incat has landed a "landmark contract" to build two massive electric ferries for Denmark, a project the company says marks a turning point for the global maritime industry.

The 129-metre vessels will be powered by 45,000 kWh battery systems and will run on one of Europe’s busiest ferry routes between Jutland and Zealand.

Danish operator Molslinjen is expected to receive the first ferry in late 2027. Each ship will carry up to 1,483 passengers and 500 cars, cruising at speeds over 40 knots.

"They are part of a new class of high-speed, low-emission ships that are redefining what's possible at sea," Incat Chairman Robert Clifford said.

The contract arrives as Incat ramps up plans to double its workforce and production capacity at its Prince of Wales Bay shipyard over the next three years, with construction on the Danish ferries to begin in the coming months.

A series of crashes down Hobart's Southern Outlet have caused widespread traffic chaos this evening.

Police responded to a multiple vehicle collision on the road heading towards Kingston just before Mount Nelson shortly before 5pm, which caused traffic delays back to the Tasman Bridge.

Another crash, involving at least three vehicles, occurred just before The Lea turnoff heading toward Kingston shortly before 6pm.

Crews remain on scene near The Lea and are working to remove the damaged vehicles, while traffic is still being delayed.

A Tasmanian businessman has unveiled plans for a $35 million hotel and residential development on Burnie’s Camdale Beach foreshore, just over a year after securing the prime waterfront site.

The proposed Strait Hotel, led by JMC’s Errol Stewart, would feature a 72-room hotel with restaurants, cafés and conference facilities, plus 12 luxury apartments spread across three hectares of beachfront land.

Stewart, best known for developing Launceston’s Peppers Seaport Hotel, is now calling for community feedback before asking Burnie City Council to begin a planning scheme amendment to get the project moving.

The site is located at the mouth of the Cam River between Burnie and Wynyard near the airport. Stewart says the location is ideal for attracting visitors.

"We'd like to do two towers of apartments. Each apartment block would have six houses in it. So one level of each apartment is one unit," he said, launching the project in Launceston today.

Jeremy Rockliff has unveiled a draft “stability agreement” to crossbench MPs as he works to form a minority government following Saturday’s state election.

Speaking at a press conference today, the Liberal leader said he has already held discussions with independents Kristie Johnston, Craig Garland, Peter George and David O'Byrne. He has also spoken with likely SFF member Carlo Di Falco.

"Today we, for discussion with the independents, present a stability agreement where we can move forward and establish some co-led, if you like, or co-developed protocols on how parliament will work and should work when it comes to everyone working together," he said.

"This is a draft stability agreement that I would like the independents to have key consideration in terms of their input ... so we can work together."

The proposed agreement includes the creation of a multi-partisan budget panel, giving the crossbench a seat at the table before budget planning begins.

Rockliff ruled out negotiating with or seeking input from the Greens, saying voters had given him no mandate to do so.

Currently, the Liberals hold 14 seats in the 35-seat lower house, with 40% of the vote, compared to Labor’s 25%. Neither major party reached the 18 seats required for majority government.

Tasmanian basketball fans have today received confirmation that Will Magnay will return to the JackJumpers for the 2025/26 NBL season.

The talented centre is set to arrive back in Tasmania this week following his NBA Summer League campaign.

The team says Magnay impressed during his time with the Memphis Grizzlies and is now ready to slot into the JackJumpers' pre-season training program.

"Summer League was an amazing and really valuable opportunity for me; I loved the experience. But I'm now excited to get home and get after it with the new group," Magnay said.

"I think it can be a really, strong, competitive group and I can’t wait to lock in with them and prepare for another season in Tassie."

The JackJumpers will open their season against Melbourne United on Thursday, September 18.

Police are continuing to hunt down those believed to be responsible for a string of homemade explosive devices left across two Kingborough suburbs over the weekend.

CCTV images allegedly show a suspicious man in a hoodie at the door of a home in Margate on Saturday night, shortly before two explosive devices were planted on two vehicles nearby.

Three vehicles were damaged by aluminium foil-wrapped devices in Kingston Beach and Margate. The devices were placed under windscreen wipers and inside letterboxes.

The explosions are believed to have occurred within 30 minutes of each other - first at Kingston Beach around 9pm, then in Margate at 9:30pm.

Authorities say if members of the public find an alfoil-wrapped parcel or device, about 8cm long, they are advised to leave it alone and contact police.

Two teenage girls are facing charges after a tourist was allegedly assaulted and left bleeding on a Hobart footpath on Monday night.

Police responded to reports of the assault near Franklin Square about 8:10pm, with a 15yo girl now charged with assault, nine counts of stealing and stealing with force, while a 16yo is facing charges of stealing and trespass.

Tasmania Police said not all charges are directly related to the assault and the 16yo's involvement in the incident is still under investigation, with both girls having been released on bail to face a youth court next month.

Restaurateur Arvi Singh said he witnessed the attack whilst driving home with his wife and immediately stopped to help.

He found the female tourist on the footpath bleeding and "completely shaken up", telling the ABC communication was difficult as she spoke only Chinese.

"When I saw these Chinese tourists on the floor, the girl on the floor bleeding, I couldn't take it," Singh said. "This needs to stop."

After calling police, Singh followed the alleged attackers and helped officers track them down at a nearby bus stop near Hobart City Apartments.

Newly elected Franklin independent Peter George has warned Tasmania’s major parties to drop rigid negotiating tactics if they want a stable minority government.

George, who received more primary votes than any other candidate in his electorate, said both Labor and Liberal had already drawn concerning “lines in the sand”.

"That's not how minority government works. That's certainly not how collaboration works," George said following "short" and "polite" conversations with party leaders on Monday.

The new MP, who was backed by $60,000 in funding from Climate 200, said he would not be “rushed into” any agreements while vote counting continues across Tasmania’s five electorates.

With Tasmania facing its second consecutive hung parliament, George said stability would depend on the major parties accepting the new reality.

George said he remained “open to either option” when it comes to which party should form government.

At present, the Liberals have secured 14 seats, Labor nine, the Greens five and independents four.

A driver high on methylamphetamine drove toward pedestrians and forced cars off the road during what a judge called an "appalling" attempt to flee police, one that could have ended in multiple deaths.

Brent Michael White, 30, was recently sentenced to 21 months in prison over his December 2022 rampage through Hobart’s northern suburbs that put dozens of innocent lives in danger.

The Supreme Court heard the incident began when detectives spotted White behind the wheel of a stolen car on Boyer Road. Rather than stopping, he sped off, hitting speeds of up to 130km/h.

Justice Michael Brett said White weaved through traffic by crossing into oncoming lanes, forcing other drivers to swerve to avoid head-on crashes.

Even after police laid down road spikes that shredded his tyres, he kept going - driving on the metal rims.

At one point, White took a roundabout in Bridgewater on the wrong side of the road, heading straight into oncoming traffic and forcing at least one car off the road.

He later lost control and veered onto a grass verge near a bus shelter, where people were waiting.

The evade ended when he crashed into the front yard of a home, wedging his car between a parked vehicle and a fence, before trying to run away on foot.

White was also disqualified from driving for three years.

Shocking footage has emerged showing the moment flight attendants battled a fire in the cabin of a Virgin Australia flight to Hobart.

The vision, filmed during flight VA1528’s descent this morning, shows crew urgently retrieving a fire extinguisher while others pour bottled water onto flames erupting from an overhead locker.

“Guys, move to the back please, move to the back,” one attendant shouts, as passengers stand up in alarm.

The fire was caused by a lithium battery stored in a passenger’s bag.

Virgin Australia said the fire was brought under control before landing and all crew were later cleared by paramedics. No injuries were reported.

Liberal leader Jeremy Rockliff says the state election result sends a “very strong signal” to the Legislative Council that Tasmanians are overwhelmingly backing the Macquarie Point stadium.

Rockliff highlighted what he called strong voter support for the $945 million Hobart stadium project tied to Tasmania’s AFL team.

"Two thirds of the Tasmanian people voted for pro-stadium candidates," Rockliff said.

"That also sends a very strong signal, in my view, to the Legislative Council, which also play a very important and key role when it comes to scrutinising legislation."

The council will have the final say on whether enabling legislation for the stadium goes ahead. Labor has already said it will back the Liberals to pass it through the lower house.

Rockliff’s comments come as he works with crossbenchers to form a minority government after Saturday’s election, which saw the Liberals win the most seats but fall short of a majority.

Homemade explosive devices detonated across two Kingborough suburbs on Saturday night have left residents shaken and warnings they could cause serious injuries and death.

Three vehicles were damaged by the aluminium foil-wrapped explosive devices across Kingston Beach and Margate. They were placed under windscreen wipers and also in letterboxes.

The explosions are thought to have occurred at random locations within 30 minutes of each other - first at Kingston Beach around 9pm and then Margate at 9:30pm.

Police discovered one of the "homemade explosive-type devices" at the Kingston Beach scene and have taken it for "analysis and forensic examination".

"If members of the public find an alfoil-wrapped parcel or device, about 8cm long, they are advised to leave it alone and contact police," they said.

Police say anyone who saw suspicious activity near Ewing Avenue in Kingston Beach and Beach Road and Endeavour Avenue in Margate around 9:30pm on Saturday can contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers.
