🐶 STRAY

Last night I was treated to a performance like I've never witnessed before. put on Stray at the and I was utterly mesmerised and entertained from beginning to end.

This incredibly high energy show is fantastic. was made to play a dog. His performance was full of bounce and enthusiasm, just like a real pup, he embodied the role brilliantly. It was quite wordy, for a play where the main character is a doberman, but Jonty didn't miss a beat. From his beginnings in the pet shop, through his many adventures and misadventures, right through to the end - which choked up many of the audience - it was so well done

Shout out to and Jessica Muir for their repertoire of characters, particularly Wa**er and Squeaky (and Inigo nailed the Scottish accent for the butcher!) And congratulations to the rest of the small and dedicated team, especially directors and .

Thank you to everyone involved for putting on theatre like this, it's so important for a community to have the opportunity to experience shows like Stray. Keep doing what you're doing 👏🙌

Do yourselves a favour and get along to MAC this week to immerse yourself in the world of Tigga the dog 🐕

(Almost forgot, they're also raising money for the in case you needed another reason to support these legends!!)

🎄 TRIVIA NIGHT

Thanks to everyone who came and supported Apple Box Studio tonight for our End of Year event and Trivia Night hosted by Marcus Johnson!!

With team names The Goop, Party Mix, Better Call Saul, and Colossal Pillar of Wasp Eggs 🤣 the teams were challenged on their knowledge of films, tv, video games, board games, comics and music. It was a tight race, with the Wasp Eggs taking out the coveted 'Popcorn Buckets of Stuff', complete with their own individual DVD copies of the 2015 Raw Nerve films 🤣😁🎬

It was a great night and a wonderful way to see out what has been an incredibly busy year at Apple Box Studio. We can't wait to see what 2026 will bring, and we look forward to seeing you, and supporting you, in the New Year 🥳✨️

Huge thanks to for the use of the Back Studio, and to Anne, Nigel, and for help with the set up and the pack down tonight 🙌💕

🚌⛔🎬 BUS STOP FILMS SHOWCASE

Tonight I was privileged to attend the Moonah Arts Centre to watch the short films created across the country as part of the 2025 Bus Stop Films Accessible Filmmaking Program - a nationwide initiative training filmmakers with disabilities. Excitingly there are two programs that run in Tasmania, one in Hobart and one in Launceston, and I watched both of those teams films this evening.

The Accessible Filmmaking Program pairs emerging filmmakers with people with disabilities, in a structured and nurturing environment. The groups learn throughout the year, and the program culminates in the groups writing, shooting, and editing a short film. Each group brings in local filmmakers and actors to assist with the filmmaking process. I saw some familiar names in the credits and at the event this evening, including BH Photo - Hobart, Ian Howard, Wayne Bassett Jacob Kingston Jags Goldsmith who was the MC for the night too, and Tashi Higgins who led the team in Hobart.

Enrolments are now open for the 2026 cohorts in both Hobart and Launceston, closing on January 9. Head to https://busstopfilms.com.au/ for more information.

💰 SHORT FILM FUNDRAISER

One of the teams that made a short film for our 48hr short film competition in August, has teamed up again and they are making a short film for Tropfest!

Now called Endangered Productions, this all female team of Elise Stansfield, Tara Carroll, Sera Livingston, and Vienna Hill have set up a fundraiser through the Australian Cultural Fund to help cover their expenses. If you have the capacity, the team would appreciate you donating them a few dollars. And it's tax deductible thanks to the ACF!

🛏 THREE IN A BED

We were treated to some unique new theatre on Friday evening. put together three short plays by different emerging writers, and funded by a grant by the hosted an evening of these plays in the barn at the

It was a clever concept, choosing three plays all set in a bedroom, recycling actors across those three plays, and having a short break between each one for people to chat, grab another drink, and go for a toilet break. A great way for those who don't go to the theatre, or haven't been for a while, to really get a sense of how it works, but in bite size chunks.

The plays were all different, all had unexpected twists, and all were highly entertaining. It helps when you have a director willing to push the boundaries, talented actors able to turn their hand to different roles on the same night, and a venue where the acoustics just work perfectly for a small, intimate, play.

Congratulations to everyone involved. I look forward to seeing what this team come up with next!

🎮 FINAL PAX PICS (just a bit late, soz)

I'll be honest, I thought I had posted these already, but what with all the advocacy to the government about the cuts to the TasTAFE arts and design courses, I must have forgotten.

Attending PAX this year, we saw so many wonderful Tasmanians all there in various capacities - some had stalls with digital games or board games they had created, some were volunteering as enforcers, some running or sitting on panels, and others just attending for the fun of it.

While in Melbourne, I caught up with the lovely .ross.walls who is in the final throes of studying Screenwriting at RMIT, and then Jags and I went to see Annie, although we sadly missed final show we did bump into them and mum in the crowd afterwards 🥳

PAX was a lot of fun and we look forward to going back next year to hopefully see even more Tasmanians 😁 If you are keen to be involved in games, Tas Game Makers are running a 2 week game jam right now (it started yesterday but it's not too late to join in the fun!) And have announced the dates for their Level Up Games Showcase for 2026 - April 17-19 at PW1 in Hobart, and they are calling for expressions of interest now 😁

😭 POSTPONE REEL TALK

We're sorry to say that we have to postpone our Reel Talk this month with Paris Buttfield-Addison. There is a clash with an event that Tas Game Makers have organised, that we really want to support, so we have made the decision to postpone this until next year, and we will do it as a collaboration with TGM.

Tas Game Makers are running a 2 week game jam starting this Weds 26 Nov at 5.30pm. The jam is online, and they are having a launch event at the Hobart Brewing Co. All details are below and we look forward to seeing you in January when we reschedule this Reel Talk: https://itch.io/jam/tasjam2025

🎭 TWO VERY DIFFERENT THEATRE SHOWS

It has been an incredibly busy couple of months and I have really missed going to see local theatre, so this weekend (in between the two days of our Intro to Screenwriting workshop with and which I'll do a separate post about soon) I went to see two very different shows.

On Friday night I headed to Back Studio to see 's Lisa Gormley's show A Woman of No Importance, starring What a beautiful, intimate, one woman play this was! It's about a woman and her deteriorating health, that really tugged at the heart strings, and hit rather close to home as I recently lost my grandmother. I loved the closeness with the audience, with Virginia even sitting with the audience at a few points, but also loved the family connections outisde the show, with her sons and husband taking charge of the backstage roles and running the bar (and I got to meet the delightful .loakman from my favourite vertical series 😁)

And on Saturday night, I headed to the to see the production of Big K***s and Broomsticks. I am no longer a B***y Panto virgin, so p**s off Buttons, and Hello Gorgeous Cassie 🤣 This was a completely different show, and I feel so blessed to live in a place where I can watch both ends of the spectrum in one weekend!

The B***y Panto felt like at Christmas. With a gnarly k**b, lots of ABC journos, past, present, in person and in framed photos (does know he was a part of the hilarity?) and some fabulously entertaining perfromances from both the leads and the ensemble (amazing work and co! 😍) The show was raising money for the brilliant organisation which I think is just incredible, well done team 👏

And finally I want to do a quick shoutout to the team who had a show that was also on this weekend, and although I couldn't make it, I have no doubt that it was wonderful, because everything they do is fabulous.

Huge thanks to everyone that has anything to do with theatre in Tasmania. I think you're all awesome 🙌

🎨🎭🎬 ARTS BUDGET ESTIMATES

I must commend Minister Ogilvie on the arts and heritage budget estimates committee today. It was nice to hear a Minister who really cares about their portfolio speak so caringly about every aspect of it.

I feel like it was made quite clear that the Minister is with the community when it comes to the whole TAFE debacle, and she is willing to work with us to find solutions. I have organised a meeting with her to discuss these solutions further, and I feel positive that we can work together to find something that will work for everyone.

The way that Minister Ellis and TasTAFE have dealt with the axing of the arts courses, and the teachers that have now all been made redundant, is nothing short of appalling and they should all be embarrassed. There has still been no apology that I'm aware of from Minister Ellis or TasTAFE (I'm happy to be corrected on that) but Minister Ogilvie, on the other hand, apologised today. She is sorry about how the whole situation has played out, and it showed. It wasn't her decision, I don't even think she was consulted, and yet she apologised. That means something, to me at least. It doesn't fix what happened, but it does at least restore my faith that some people in the government care.

We have a long way to go as a community, but let's take this as an opportunity to build the sector the way we want it. Experienced local professionals training up-and-coming emerging local creatives, right here in Tasmania, but doing it our way. That sounds good to me. Who's with me?
