🔎 Monthly update

It's been a busy time at Apple Box (when isn't it?) so I figured it was time for an update.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know we ran a 48hr film comp in Aug, so this is about everything else we've been doing (I have more from the awards night, but I'm spreading it out so you don't get sick of me! 🤣)

We collaborated with for their Intro to Producing & Screen Business at the Hub. A fab group of people came from across the state, and tutor Michelle was so generous with her time and knowledge. Thanks to AFTRS, Michelle and everyone who took part. We look forward to bringing you more collabs with AFTRS soon - let us know of any specific workshops you want us to run.

I attended an info session run by .australia as part of the festival

One of my chickens laid a double yolker (not Apple Box related, but I thought it was worth celebrating 🥳🥚🥚)

We continued to collect container donations from our supporters at and for

We had a delightful meeting with Mayor Paula Wreidt

I attended the monthly meetup at the

I went to the as an audience member for the filming of a new comedy pilot (all hush hush, can't tell you anything, so I took a pic of the disco ball)

I ran a session with young filmmakers to ask their thoughts on the state of the screen industry. I'm calling it SEEDS (from little seeds big ideas grow...apples have seeds...) They were awesome and I'm keen to repeat this with other young creatives (theatre/games/sound etc). Please get in touch if you want to be involved.

We went to the UNESCO City of Literature event at Town Hall

We advocated for the arts at a Tas Trade Strategy 2030 session

I saw Taroona High's In Bloom arts event

We went to the 3rd & final workshop hosted by

I helped board member Nina set up her Expo at MAC02 (Sun 14 Sep)

And I saw 's Chicago again with the always spectacular Harriet Gould and Lucy McKenna killing it as Roxie & Velma 😁💃👏

💃🎭 CHICAGO

Wow, Hobart! If you like musical theatre, you will LOVE the senior ensemble's performance of Chicago.

I'm a sucker for jazz and the 1920's style of clothing (I own far too many flapper dresses!), but for whatever reason, I've never seen Chicago, either on stage or the movie. But that all changed last night.

The costumes should get the first mention. White dresses, black dresses, red dresses, stripy prison dresses... 🤩

I love that they incorporated the orchestra into the set and even into the story at one point (poor Amos, chasing his spot light around 🥺)

And a shout out to the choreography - the men in their suits and tails, the circus scene with the juggling and plate spinning, but I think my favourite scene is at the beginning where the women are describing their crimes and the men are dragged off stage one at a time - it was so well done!!!

There are three casts for the three female roles, and then two casts for the rest of the main characters. I have no doubt the other casts are just as good, but we saw some seriously stand out performers who I can't wait to see progress their performing careers. Sarah Mundy and Sally Quinn were absolutely perfect as Roxie and Velma, Zara Tsiakis killed it as Mama, and huge shout out to Charlie Fiedler and Kiri Patterson who both absolutely shone in their roles as Frank and Amos. Such incredible up and coming talent!!!

What a wonderful night of entertainment! Seriously, congratulations to the whole cast and crew 👏👏👏✨️

One thing I don't understand, is when you see a show, the actors thank you for coming. Seriously? I just sat and got entertained for a couple of hours. You did all the work! You put in the effort, put yourself on stage and performed in front of an audience. All I did was sit on a chair. WE should be thanking YOU for performing! (Thank you!! 😁)

The first performance was called Pears 🍐 where audience members chose which actors would perform the next scene. Such a clever concept, and all the pairings worked so well together, honestly I could have watched a whole night of those short skits 🤣

The second one was called St Evangeline's School of intrigue, mystery and intrigue. The audience chose the main topic that the students were studying (tax returns) and the item that had been stolen (abacus schmabacus) and what followed was about an hour of hilarity, a talking horse, and lots of plaid! 🐎

And finally, the Lighthouse, the same setting used for a unique show each night. The same premise - a lighthouse keeper shows up to take over from another lighthouse keeper - but different actors, different storyline, different tone, and all very entertaining ⚓️

Tonight is the last night I believe, so if you don't already have plans, go along to the Peacock Theatre and enjoy yourself! Oh and thank the actors at the end, they deserve it ✨️

🎬 Night Visions!!

Yesterday evening I went to at .cider - only the third one this year apparently - and despite being FREEZING 🥶 (I did take my own urn and enormous hot water bottle though 😁) it was just so much fun!! Tons of lovely people braved the cold to watch and celebrate the achievements of the local screen community. Damn they're a talented bunch!

We were treated to a few music videos, a trailer for an upcoming 35 minute film by (stay tuned for details on how to get tickets for that!) and a variety of short films. One comedy requiring a content warning, which I hid behind a cushion for a lot of, but still managed to see a dismembered p***s and a terrifying amount of fake blood 😳🤣 (it was actually quite a good film!) and a favourite of mine which I've seen a few times now, "Loop" from and .

Thanks to and for organising, the team at Simple Cider for providing the venue, and all the brave filmmakers who share their work so that the screen community can have an excuse to gather together ❤️ I really love the arts community here in Tassie, we are so lucky 🙌✨️

🎭 Improvised Theatre

Last night I was fortunate enough to be in the audience for some fabulous improvised Theatre, and it was SO good!!!

For just $30 (or $20 concession) I watched three separate plays, all very different, and all comedic, entertaining, and so brilliantly acted. Honestly, I know I keep saying it, but we are just so spoilt with the calibre of actors we have in this state!

The Dark Impro Festival run by is on all week and I would seriously urge you to get along to the Peacock Theatre at the to support their inaugural festival. It takes a ton of effort to put something like this on, trust me. They do it for the community, so help them out by grabbing yourself a ticket, you won't regret it. And maybe I'll see you there! 😁

I just spent a most enjoyable evening as a guest at the for the launch of the trailer for the documentary "The Road Between Us" a project from the and the 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃

Manish, Rojina, and others whose names I have forgotten (please forgive me, I am terrible with names!) are the incredible people behind this project. They have made a full-length documentary about running the 200km journey from Hobart to Launceston, a story full of passion, drama, laughter, and tears. I am so excited to see the full film!

It is screening on Sunday 14 September at Village Cinemas Glenorchy, and I would urge everyone to go and support them. I will share the link in our story.

We are so blessed to have the opportunity to meet, listen to, and learn from people from all walks of life, from different parts of the world, who create art to share their stories. I met so many beautiful people tonight who were all there to celebrate their achievements as a community, it was humbling to see. We are all humans, we all deserve love and respect, and art has an incredible way of bringing people together.

Thank you for the invite Rojina ❤️ and all the best to the filmmakers 🙌

Also, anyone who has experience making and releasing documentaries, who would like to provide advice or support to these filmmakers, please get in touch 🙏

🏆🎤 Judges picks

Peaches interviewed our judges shortly after the awards were completed, and this video is what they had to say!

I just want to extend a huge thanks again to Monique Brumby Vicki Madden and Tim Noonan for so generously giving their time and expertise to support emerging filmmakers 🎊❤️ The future of the sector in Tasmania is bright because of people like them.

📷: All video content has been created and edited by the incredible Peaches at Peaches Creative Studios 👏🥳 Thank you!!

(Quick clarification re the film Grievances that is mentioned - the scene on the beach is the father, daughter and son spreading the mother's ashes, not the father, daughter and mother)

We are working with all the filmmakers and aim to have all the films available for you to watch on our website very soon. We'll keep you posted on that!

🎭 Recent Theatre 🎭

Need respite from our 48hr film comp? Let me rave about theatre for a bit!

⚡️The Lightning Thief by was honestly fabulous. Many of the kids hadn't had access to drama at school so this was their first foray into theatre, and they did so well. Their passion and enthusiasm was evident and these kids are fortunate to be under the tutelage of .maria.90 I really hope some of these students continue to pursue acting 🤞

🌅 Red Sky Morning - final script reading from at the Directed by the inimitable and expertly performed by and What a gut punch of a show! Characters talking over each other to show miscommunication was confronting and intensely effective

🎶 Mamma Mia by and proved what years of exceptional drama education can do. An absolute stunner of a show - top notch performances were matched by the live orchestra, all bopping along to music they clearly loved. Shout out to the backstage crew - props, set design, costumes, lighting, all spectacular

🍅 Looking for Alibrandi. I rarely attend a non-Tassie show but we were invited by our friends at to attend and I'm so glad we did! The show was highly entertaining and I particularly loved the costume changes on stage

💚 Students at did Shrek Jr. The lead actor invited us when we met at a careers expo a few months ago. They should all be proud of their stellar performances, shout out to Shrek, Fiona, Donkey & Lord Farquaad. Can't wait to see these kids in future shows

🐚 Lord of the Flies at has changed me forever. Seeing performers that usually entertain in comedies and musicals, suddenly become angry, psychotic beasts was incredibly moving. I am continually blown away by .a.m.e.s.mc and .soph 👏👏

🪄 And finally have smashed it with Harry Potter & the Cursed Child. What a phenomenal show! The actors, special FX, set design, dementors, choreo, lighting, honestly it was like going to a professional show in Melbourne 🤩✨️
