The Greens have reignited calls for pill testing in Tasmania, as the government continues to oppose the measure.

MP Helen Burnet told parliament the service would “undoubtedly save lives”, pointing to ACT trials where a third of people disposed of drugs after unexpected substances were found.

Health Minister Bridget Archer rejected the push, warning pill testing could create liability risks and a false sense of security for users.

Labor and independents backed the idea as a health-led response, with MPs noting festivals and illicit drugs “aren’t going away” as the summer season approaches.

A Glenorchy man will face court after police allegedly found a homemade handgun during a routine traffic stop in Sandy Bay.

The 34yo was arrested around midday today after officers say the improvised weapon was concealed in his vehicle.

He has been charged with unlicensed firearm possession, drug offences, and breaching bail and a restraint order.

Police warned of the dangers of makeshift weapons, saying homemade guns are unpredictable and pose serious risks to the community.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff has avoided guaranteed back pay for Tasmanian firefighters, with wage talks dragging on for more than six months and no resolution in sight.

Labor leader Josh Willie told parliament it was now “highly unlikely” a new agreement would be finalised this year and demanded retrospective payments.

Rockliff blamed the delays partly on the election but insisted negotiations were continuing in good faith.

Firefighters, who receive just 15% in penalty rates compared with up to 30% for other state servants, lodged their pay claim in February.

Overnight lane closures will take place on the Brooker Highway at Montrose this week as traffic lights are installed at a notorious crash hotspot.

Single-lane restrictions will run from 7pm to 5am on Wednesday and Thursday, with the Duncan Street and Riverway Road intersection closed during those hours.

Normal traffic will resume by 6:30am each morning to avoid peak-hour delays, while workers build a service trench for the upgrade.

The project includes new lights and crossings near Montrose Bay High, with works due for completion by April 2026, weather permitting.

One of Tasmania’s most distinctive tourism attractions has been sold, with the Richmond Maze changing hands to an international buyer.

The freehold property at 13 Bridge Street includes two mazes, landscaped gardens and a purpose-built café and restaurant.

Ray White Commercial Tasmania handled the sale, saying strong local and international interest reflected the site’s unique offering.

Agents said the property’s location, quality and scale made it a compelling investment, with the new owner expected to build on recent upgrades to the hospitality and maze experience.

Tasmania has recorded a 38% rise in methamphetamine use over the last year, with most illicit drugs entering via external channels including the postal system.

Crime Stoppers Tasmania is working with police and Australia Post to intercept parcels concealing drugs, steroids and firearm parts.

Recent operations led to 37 seizures, including 468 grams of methamphetamine and $41,500 in cash hidden in books. One community tip-off uncovered 155 grams of ice in the north.

Authorities say vigilance and reporting are vital, urging the public to flag unusual deliveries or suspicious activity at parcel lockers.

New Independent Bass MP George Razay broke into song during his maiden speech to parliament today, reciting the Lord’s Prayer in Aramaic - the language spoken by Jesus Christ.

Other MPs looked on as Razay lifted his hands to encourage them to join in while he delivered the ancient prayer.

The 69yo traced his journey from rural Syria to Tasmania, where he became a geriatrician and dementia researcher at Launceston General Hospital.

He credited his late father’s £1,000 savings, his wife and daughter for shaping his path, before closing his 30-minute speech with the prayer.

New Braddon MP Gavin Pearce has used his maiden speech to call for stronger veteran mental health care, revealing his own struggle with PTSD.

The decorated soldier and former federal MP condemned the practice of sending Tasmanian veterans interstate for short-term treatment with little follow-up support.

Pearce recalled confronting then-PM Scott Morrison over a Royal Commission into veteran su***de, a clash he said proved decisive in securing the inquiry.

He outlined plans for family-centred care facilities, pledged to champion agriculture and urged employers to recognise the skills and values veterans bring to workplaces.

New Franklin MP Peter George has used his maiden speech to blast both major parties over salmon farming and the government’s stadium plan.

The former journalist said years of ignored community concerns about salmon, including mass fish deaths over summer, pushed him to enter politics.

He accused MPs of backing multinationals while locals bore environmental costs, warning the industry faced collapse from disease, warming waters and public opposition.

George also labelled the Macquarie Point stadium a “vanity project”, but signalled he would work constructively with government while pushing for integrity, transparency and human rights reforms.

Four dolphins have died in salmon farm entanglements in Tasmania this year, government data has revealed.

The short-beaked common dolphins were killed at Huon Aquaculture leases in Storm Bay, the Huon River and the D’Entrecasteaux Channel between March and June.

It brings the industry’s toll to seven dolphins and 23 seals over the past three years, fuelling calls for salmon farms to be removed from coastal waters.

Huon said it was investigating and operated under strict standards, while the state government has paused expansion and ordered an independent review.

Tasmanian women are facing up to 12 months without a mobile breast screening bus after one of the state’s two vehicles was permanently retired.

The unit, known as ‘Luna’, was pulled from service due to water damage, cancelling screenings across parts of regional Tasmania.

Health Minister Bridget Archer told parliament today that the Department of Health was in the final stages of procurement but had not yet placed an order for a replacement.

Interim measures include fixed-site appointments, a temporary Devonport clinic, travel assistance and a free charter bus from the east coast to Hobart.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff has defended the Macquarie Point stadium, saying Tasmania would be “living in paddocks and caves” without major infrastructure projects.

In parliament this morning, Greens MP Vica Bayley pressed the premier over the impact of the project on the state budget, arguing essential services were already under strain.

Rockliff dismissed the concerns, pointing to voter support at the last state election and saying the project would deliver 4000 jobs and revitalise a long underdeveloped site.

"If governments of all persuasions over the course of the last 100 years had a belief that we did not invest in key enabling infrastructure... then we'll be living in paddocks and caves," Rockliff told parliament.

A key planning report on the stadium is due next week.
