Police believe the incident was targeted and are appealing for information via South East CIB on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers.

Tasmanians will rally twice in November as both sides of the Macquarie Point stadium debate take to the streets.

Anti-stadium group Our Place will protest the $1.13 billion project on November 23, while Yes AFL Team, Yes Stadium supporters will gather a week later on November 30.

Our Place's Roland Browne said the government’s spending priorities were wrong, with author Richard Flanagan adding the project threatens Tasmania’s future.

Pro-stadium organiser Mark Brown said their rally at Parliament Lawns would prove strong public support as MPs prepare to debate the project in parliament.

The fire at Wellington Court was reported just after 2:30pm on Monday.

Cordons have been set up around the area as crews work to bring the blaze under control.

The Tasmania Fire Service says the fire appears to involve "an exhaust fan connected to a food outlet".

Tasmania Police have released more details after a .22 rifle shot allegedly struck an unmarked police car at a Collinsvale property on Sunday afternoon.

Three detectives - a sergeant and two constables - were driving through the front gate around 4pm when a bullet hit near the car’s wheel guard.

They were being followed by two other police vehicles, one of which was marked, to execute a search warrant.

Police allege a 37yo woman - since charged with attempted murder - fired the rifle from near a house about 60 metres away.

Assistant Commissioner Adrian Bodnar said it was “extremely fortunate” no one was injured, describing the incident as “reprehensible”.

Spirit of Tasmania operator TT-Line will receive a $75 million government bailout in next week’s interim state budget.

Infrastructure Minister Kerry Vincent said the money ensures the company remains in a “strong financial position” to deliver two new vessels next year.

The ferry operator had asked for $100 million in equity from the government, with its board to work with Treasury if the remaining $25 million is needed.

: A 37yo woman has been charged with attempted murder after a shot was allegedly fired at police executing a search warrant at a Collinsvale property near Hobart overnight.

Police say a bullet struck an unmarked vehicle as officers entered the property, where the woman and a 38yo man were later arrested without incident.

Assistant Commissioner Adrian Bodnar said both were found with fi****ms and that it appeared they did not realise officers were at the gate.

“This incident could have had tragic consequences and it was extremely fortunate that no one was physically harmed,” he said.

Snow has been reported down to around 500 metres across southern Tasmania this morning, with light falls in Mount Nelson, West Hobart and Lenah Valley as a cold southerly airstream moves across the state.

The road to the summit of Hobart’s kunanyi/Mt Wellington has been closed due to the wintry conditions.

Temperatures in the city were sitting at around 4.3 degrees earlier but felt closer to -1.1 degrees with the wind chill.

The Bureau of Meteorology says conditions are expected to ease from Tuesday, with fine and calm weather returning by mid-week.

Laraine Ludwig has renewed calls for government action on knife crime after a young man was allegedly fatally stabbed on Hobart’s waterfront.

A 20yo died in a car park near Salamanca just after midnight on Saturday - on what would have been Ludwig’s late son Reid’s birthday.

Reid was killed in a knife attack in 2019, prompting the introduction of Reid’s Law, which gave police powers to use metal-detecting wands.

Ludwig is now demanding answers on how often the wands are being used, saying more needs to be done to prevent further tragedies.

Police said the wands have been used periodically since the end of the trial in March, while Police Minister Felix Ellis said the most recent state election had delayed a wider rollout.

Police say a 17yo boy is in custody and helping detectives with their investigation into a fatal stabbing on Hobart’s waterfront overnight.

Detective Acting Inspector Rick Newman said the alleged incident on Saturday night, which left a 20yo man from the greater southern Hobart area dead, is being treated as murder.

He said the 17yo “presented himself” to police this morning “after hearing that we were looking for him”, but that no charges have yet been laid.

Another 20yo who was earlier assisting with inquiries has been charged with assault, though not in connection with the stabbing or death.

A second victim, a 23yo man, remains in a stable condition at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

A cold front is sweeping across Tasmania this afternoon, bringing snow, hail and icy winds that will linger into Monday.

The Bureau of Meteorology expects snow to fall to about 700 metres in the south tonight, dropping to 500 metres by morning as showers spread across southern and eastern districts.

Monday will be the coldest day of the week, with small hail possible and chilly southerlies keeping temperatures low.

Conditions will ease from Tuesday as a high-pressure system moves over the state, bringing clearer skies, lighter winds and afternoon sea breezes.

Air New Zealand has returned to Hobart for its fifth season, adding more than 25,000 extra seats to meet demand.

The seasonal service resumed today, delivering an 11% capacity boost on last year and deploying larger A321 aircraft on most flights.

Hobart Airport’s Matt Cocker said the expansion was a win for Tasmania’s tourism sector and showed the route’s strength beyond its government-funded beginnings.

Flights to Auckland will run three times a week until the end of March.

The University of Tasmania will again train midwives from mid-2026, nearly a decade after its course was scrapped due to low enrolments.

Recruitment is underway for teaching staff, including a professor and senior lecturer in midwifery, to deliver the revived Graduate Diploma of Midwifery.

Health Minister Bridget Archer said the state government’s partnership with UTAS would help grow the local workforce and improve maternity care for Tasmanian women.

Online information sessions for registered nurses will be held in November as part of the state’s Midwifery Matters workforce strategy.
