Sad news in the entertainment world as country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80.
Her family announced the news today, bringing to an end an extraordinary career that lasted for more than six decades and saw Dolly become one of the most recognisable and successful figures in country music.
Born in Tennessee in 1946, Dolly grew up in a large family with very little money and began singing from an early age. By 10 she was performing on local radio, and at 13 she had recorded her first single and appeared at the Grand Ole Opry.
After moving to Nashville, she began to establish herself as a songwriter before becoming a star in her own right.
Songs including Jolene, 9 to 5, Coat of Many Colors and I Will Always Love You became classics. The latter would, of course, later become an enormous worldwide hit for Whitney Houston.
Dolly also found success away from music. She starred in films including 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, and in 1986 opened Dollywood in Tennessee, which went on to become a major attraction.
Her charity work was also a huge part of her life. Through her Imagination Library, millions of books have been given to children, while she also donated $1 million towards research that helped develop a COVID-19 vaccine.
Dolly had experienced health problems in recent months and had been forced to cancel appearances and postpone performances. Just days ago, she had spoken about continuing to work and still having things she wanted to achieve.
She leaves behind an incredible catalogue of music and a career that crossed generations.
Very sad news.
