Teenager accused of murdering Vyleen White in Redbank Plains expected to enter plea this month

The teenager accused of killing 70-year-old Ipswich woman Vyleen White is expected to enter a plea later this month, a court has heard.

Ms White suffered a fatal stab wound at a shopping centre car park in Redbank Plains, south-west of Brisbane, in February last year.

It is alleged the then 16-year-old, who cannot be named under Queensland's youth justice laws, stabbed her before stealing her car.

The now 17-year-old was committed to stand trial in March on several charges including murder and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

On Wednesday, those charges were presented in the Supreme Court in Brisbane.

The teen was not required to appear during the indictment, but the court heard he would be present for an arraignment.

This was set down for about three weeks' time, where he will be asked to formally enter a plea.

He was remanded in custody until his matter returns to court.

Weapon and drug charges, Goodna

POLICE have charged a 23-year-old man with drug and weapon offences following the search of a vehicle at Goodna last night.

Around 11.40pm officers intercepted a 2015 Ford Falcon utility travelling along Bellevue Road.

While speaking with the driver, officers detected a suspicious odour which led to a subsequent search of the vehicle.

It is alleged while searching the vehicle officers located a backpack containing 3.3 grams of methylamphetamine, several containers of cannabis along with a personal manufactured firearm and a bag containing ammunition.

A 23-year-old man from Springfield man has been charged with five offences including two counts of possessing dangerous drugs and one count each of unlawful possession of weapons, authority required to possess explosives and unlicenced driving.

Acting Detective Inspector Steven Williamson said personal manufactured fi****ms are of significant concern to police due to the potential to impact on community safety.

“These weapons are dangerous, and we are committed in ensuring they are removed from our community.

“If anyone has information on someone in possession or manufacturing these types of weapons, I urge you to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.”

Operation Whiskey Firestorm is a high-impact statewide initiative designed to tackle the critical issues of firearm safety and illicit fi****ms.

This operation comes in response to 2024 statistics which saw 1,055 firearm licenses revoked, and over 3,290 offences involving fi****ms, including serious offences such as attempted murder, assault, robbery and unlawful entry.

The QPS will be conducting extensive audits, coordinating regional operations, and working with licensed firearm owners to ensure they meet safety and ownership rules and regulations.

Govt help sought for slain mother's parentless kids

Help is being sought from the federal government to bring the family of an allegedly murdered mother to Australia to look after her parentless children.

A grandmother and an uncle are hoping to reunite with the two boys of a woman allegedly murdered by her husband and brother-in-law in Queensland.

Muzhada Habibi, 23, was found unresponsive by emergency services in an Ipswich residence west of Brisbane on May 16, dying at the scene.

Her husband Masihullah Habibi, 26, and his brother Khalilullah Habibi, 28, were charged with her murder.

The family were originally from Afghanistan and had recently moved to the Ipswich suburb of Springfield Lakes.

Immigration lawyers are assisting the grandmother and uncle who are aiming to help look after Ms Habibi's two young sons, who have been without parents for about a month.

However the commonwealth has been asked to fast track the process after the husband and his brother's matter was mentioned in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Advocate Rita Anwari said they were trying to fly the grandmother and uncle in from the United Kingdom and Spain where they lived as permanent residents.

"We need the help of the federal government to make the process faster and also the department of Child Safety to escalate the cases as soon as (possible)," she said outside court.

"These children have gone through a month already (without family), they need their family to be close to them."

Ms Anwari said there had been difficulties bringing Ms Habibi's family to Australia because they were permanent residents in Europe, not citizens.

"I will fight for this to get this grandmother and uncle to Australia for the sake of the children," she said.

"These children are motherless and fatherless. They have no one in Australia."

In a letter to the family seen by AAP, Queensland Minister for Women Fiona Simpson said the community had been devastated by Ms Habibi's death.

"She was not just a name in the news - she was a daughter, a sister, a mother to two young boys and a valuable member of the Queensland community," she wrote.

"The sorrow of losing her in such circumstances is profound and immeasurable."

The matter for Masihullah and Khalilullah Habibi on Wednesday was adjourned until July 9, with a brief of evidence requested on August 20.

Ipswich Budget delivers with major investments in health, education, roads, and community safety

THE 2025–26 Queensland State Budget delivers significant benefits for Ipswich across health, education, transport, justice, and housing.

The Budget focuses on addressing the crises in youth crime, health, housing, and the cost of living, while building generational infrastructure to support Ipswich’s rapid growth.

A centrepiece of the Budget is the $925 million upgrade to Ipswich Hospital, including a new acute clinical services building as part of the fully funded Hospital Rescue Plan.

The Budget also allocates $4 million for a detailed business case for a Second River Crossing across the Bremer River in Central Ipswich—an important step towards easing congestion and improving connectivity in the city.

Education receives a major boost, with funding for a new primary school in Ripley Valley to meet the needs of the growing community, as well as new special school campuses at Ipswich West and Springfield-Redbank. Ipswich North State School will benefit from playground upgrades and new shade sails, while Ipswich State High School will gain new grandstands. A new multipurpose school and community hall will be delivered at Haigslea State School.

In a further commitment to safety, the Budget funds the commencement of a $15 million upgrade of the Goodna Police facility and provides $38 million for a new police facility at Ripley. Additional investments include $10 million for a new permanent fire and rescue station in Greater Springfield, and $4 million for extra POLAIR flight hours in South East Queensland.

Road and transport projects feature prominently, with upgrades planned for the Brisbane Valley Highway between Esk and Blacksoil to improve safety and access. Footpath upgrades in Laidley CBD, Hatton Vale, and Withcott will also enhance local connectivity and pedestrian safety.

Community and sporting facilities have not been overlooked. The Budget provides $780,000 for upgrades to the iconic Queens Park tennis courts in partnership with the Ipswich District Junior Tennis Association, $150,000 for grandstands at the Musketeers Baseball Club, and $800,000 for new lighting at Rosewood Showgrounds. The Redbank Plains Library car park will be extended with $550,000 allocated, and $2.9 million will upgrade the Kilcoy indoor sports centre.

Housing remains a key focus, with $73.2 million invested to improve social and community housing across Ipswich.

Cost of living support will be delivered through $100 Back to School Boost vouchers, $200 Play On! sports vouchers, and new nation-leading programs to help Queenslanders own a home.

Gout Gout made his professional racing debut in Europe overnight, flying to a new national record.

At the race run in Czech Republic, Gout came within a fraction of legally breaking 20 seconds as the 17-year-old came down hard on the home straight to claim victory in the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in 20.02 seconds with no wind.

Gout bested his own 20.04s 200m record that he set in December last year, when he broke Peter Norman’s record set at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.

“Get some more races in me and it [20 seconds] will drop for sure,” Gout said after what was also his first professional race.
