After the 11:00 am news on Thursday 31 July, I will be chatting live with Steve Chandler on the topic of dodgy builders and how to avoid them. Steve is a Building & Property Development Expert, Managing Director of LEFTA

There’s plenty of dodgy builders around, just check the number of public warnings issued by your local builders licensing authority.

So, how exactly do you avoid them when you need some work done around your home? First and foremost, whenever you talk to a builder, ask to see their builders license, take down their number, and check with the authorities whether the license is valid and if there have been any previous complaints.

Next, do a web search on them to see if there are any reviews - people often post about builders they have difficulty with. But most importantly, check their references. If they say they’ve built a project or done work for someone, ask for the client’s number and call them.

Join me at 10:05 am Perth time Thursday 31 July for a chat with Melanie Gates CEO of Diabetes WA.

Australia has a $14b diabetes price tag.

New research has found that the cost of diabetes to Australia’s healthcare system was $14.2 billion in 2024. According to researchers from Deakin, La Trobe, and Curtin universities, the cost of healthcare for the millions of Australians living with diabetes is on average, double that of someone without the condition - $9,677 per person with diabetes annually compared to $4,669.

Hospital admissions accounted for more than two-thirds of the total healthcare costs of diabetes.

As families brace for the winter power bill shock

Australian households and businesses should brace themselves for a big jump in electricity bills this quarter, with rises between 10% and 25% expected, depending on the region and provider. Residential customers on default offers could see an annual bill rise of $300 to $450, while small businesses face increases of $700 to $1,100 per year.

So, why the massive increase? First, wholesale prices - which make up 30 to 40% of the bill - have surged due to higher global prices for coal and gas.

Secondly, the estimated $12.7 billion costs associated with large-scale infrastructure upgrades to enable the shift to renewables are being passed on to consumers. Households who don’t shop around for competitive electricity plans and small businesses will be hardest hit. To avoid winter bill shock, consumers should compare energy plans, invest in energy efficiency measures, and take advantage of any state-based energy bill relief payments

Thursday 24 July In Good Company with Lisa Evans 89 7FM Perth I will be chatting at 11:00 with Di Geddes Registered Nurse about the guilt associated with being everything to everyone

Being part of the ‘sandwich generation’ can expose you to feelings of inadequacy and an enormous amount of guilt. You’re stuck in the middle of caring for small children, teenagers, and/or young adults, while also caring for elderly parents, with very little time left for yourself. The guilt you feel when you cannot be there for your child is only equalled by the guilt you feel when your parents, who’ve sacrificed everything for you, need you and you cannot be there for them. And if you’re also having to take charge of your parents because of their declining cognitive state, this adds a whole new dimension to the guilt and sadness you feel. Registered Nurse, Di Geddes, discusses how to let go of the unrealistic expectations we have of ourselves, and the guilt we feel when we simply cannot be everything to everyone.

Would you benefit from a Swedish Death Clean?

When we’re young we accumulate things, believing they’ll bring us happiness. But over time, growing clutter acts like visual noise, overwhelming our minds.
When we clear clutter, we make space for mental clarity. And one effective way to do that is the ‘Swedish Death Clean’. Ask yourself whether you’d want your loved ones dealing with these items if you were gone. If not, they’ve got to go. It doesn’t have to be a harsh process, just a decisive one.

Debbie will share three simple steps to clear out the old to make way for the new.

You must have been hiding under a rock if you have not hear of the Mushroom Cook!

Joining me at 9:30 am is Dr Tanveer Ahmed Psychiatrist, to chat about the psychology of women who poison

Erin Patterson is found guilty, and the case has led to a focus on the psychology of female killers. Poisoning is much more likely to be instigated by women. It’s nonviolent, nonconfrontational, and usually requires an element of social manipulation. The victims are more likely to be extended family, as they were in the mushroom tragedy. While not a feature of the Patterson case, female driven murders can be a pathological extension of the caregiving role, such as when mothers kill their children believing it’s in their best interests. The most famous Australian poisoner was Caroline Grills, a 19th century grandmother who killed multiple members of her extended family for financial gain by adding thallium to her homemade treats.

Weight gain and winter: a match made for diabetes

Weight gain is common over winter. It’s a time where we retreat into our homes, getting little exercise and little sunlight, like bears in a cave.
Our healthy habits seem to fly out the window as we crave hearty comfort foods with extra cream, butter, and gravy. Being overweight or obese is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes (T2D), which affects almost 1.3 million Australians and is the most common type of diabetes, representing about 90% of cases.
The irony is that whilst T2D is largely preventable, rates are skyrocketing as the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia. This National Diabetes Week, how can we best reduce our risk and keep the kilos off over winter?

National Diabetes Week runs from 13 - 19 July

Do separate homes equal more passion?

With a recent study finding that one in 10 couples are choosing to keep separate homes, the familiar ‘meet, commit and move in’ tradition from the past is under threat. So why is this becoming more common than you would think?

Dating Coach, Karina Chapman, says that keeping the mystery alive of what happens in the bedroom isn’t a bad thing. Often couples argue about insignificant household issues, which can cause major fallouts and even permanent break-ups. Interestingly, research shows that men who lived with a partner managed intimacy once or twice a month on average.
Those living apart? Three to seven times a month. Although many may struggle to justify the financial cost of two households, the pay-off of less arguments, more quality time together, and more passion, could make it all worthwhile!

What do you think??
