Happy Father’s Day 💙

We spent some time choosing a few Father’s Day gifts, and it got me thinking about all the different men who play an important part in a child’s life.

Today I want to wish a Happy Father’s Day to the dads, grandads, stepdads, uncles, father figures and other men who show up, encourage, guide and create special memories with the children in their lives.

Families can look very different, and every child’s story is different too. What matters most is having people around them who make them feel loved, supported, valued and heard.

Because every child deserves to feel heard. 💙

Happy Father’s Day to all the men making a positive difference in the lives of children today.

Today, let’s make sure the men who quietly show up for our children feel heard too. 💙 Tag a dad, grandad, stepdad, uncle, mentor or father figure who deserves to know the difference he makes.

💚 WELCOME TO HEARD | FOUNDING MEMBER

There are some people you meet through business and then there are people who become genuine friends.

I’m really happy to welcome Joanna McNamara from Adrams Mediation Services Dispute Resolution Centre as a Founding Member of HEARD.

Jo and I can literally talk for hours. We have so much in common, and I think one of the reasons we get along so well is that neither of us is particularly interested in sugarcoating things.

Jo says it as it is.

She’ll listen. She’ll consider what’s being said. But she’ll also tell you what you may need to hear not simply what you want to hear.

I really value that about her.

I haven’t personally used Jo as my mediator. Because we’re friends, there would be a conflict of interest and, actually, that highlights something else I respect enormously about her.

Professional boundaries, ethics and following the rules matter.

But one of the things Jo and I connect particularly strongly on is the importance of being child-centred.

When adults are in conflict, there can be two very different perspectives. Both people need the opportunity to talk, listen and be heard.

But when a child is involved, amongst all the adult conversations, disagreements and emotions, the child cannot become lost.

What does the child need?
What is in their best interests?
How do we move forward while keeping the child at the centre?

For me, that is incredibly important.

Jo-Anna also brings years of experience and integrity to the work she does. Since establishing Adrams Mediation Services in 2017, she has supported people across family and parenting matters, property and financial disputes, workplace matters and community disputes.

Their words “Giving Peace a Chance” seem particularly fitting.

Jo, I’m so pleased to have you joining HEARD as a Founding Member but I’m even more grateful to be able to call you my friend. 💚

🏗️ YANCHEP’S NEXT 50 YEARS BUT WHAT DOES OUR COMMUNITY WANT?

There are big plans being proposed for the future of Yanchep City Centre.

Thousands of new homes, commercial and retail development, schools, a future hospital site, potential tertiary education facilities and buildings reaching up to 30 storeys around Yanchep Station.

But before we only talk about what Yanchep could look like in 50 years, perhaps we need to listen to the people who already call this community home.

And you’ve been telling us.

Residents have raised the need for better road infrastructure and a freeway extension, rather than continuing to rely on roads and roundabouts that will carry an increasing population.

We’ve heard calls for a hospital much sooner with one resident saying waiting another 20 years would already be too late.

We’ve heard people wanting Yanchep to retain its character, with more unique, independent and local businesses rather than simply recreating the same retail centres we see elsewhere.

We’ve also heard from residents who do want access to major retailers such as Kmart, Best & Less and Chemist Warehouse closer to home.

Others have raised smaller but important pieces of community infrastructure such as a coastal cycle path, a car wash, bike shop, pool-care services and other facilities people currently travel significant distances to access.

And as development continues, there are also broader questions about our roads and how increasing construction and traffic will affect the communities already using them.

That’s exactly why community consultation matters.

Growth is coming. The question is how we want that growth to look and whether the infrastructure will grow with us.

📣 The proposed Yanchep City Centre Precinct Structure Plan is currently open for public consultation until 1 October 2026.

Have your say through the City of Wanneroo I’ve put the link in the comments.

And keep talking to HEARD.

What do you want Yanchep to have? What do we need sooner rather than later? What do you want decision-makers to understand about living in our northern communities today?

Your community. Your future. Your voice deserves to be HEARD.

🌿WELCOME TO OUR FOUNDING PARTNER🌿

Wayfinder Counselling

Sometimes we all need a little support finding our way through the things life puts in front of us.

Wayfinder Counselling is about providing a supportive space to talk, reflect and work through life’s challenges — helping people feel more grounded, find their direction and move forward.

Grounded • Anchored • Growth

We’re proud to have Wayfinder Counselling as a Founding Partner of HEARD Media. 🤍

Because at the heart of both Wayfinder and HEARD is something pretty simple — people deserve to be heard.

🌿WELCOME TO OUR FOUNDING PARTNER

We’re excited to welcome Sue Birch from B Safe Well Healthy – The Wellness Shop as a Founding Partner of HEARD Media. 🤍

This one is particularly special to me.
Sue was once one of my students.

As a student, Sue was one of the quiet ones. She may not have been the loudest voice in the room but when Sue had something to say, she made her voice be heard and it had a profound effect on me.

As a Lecturer, you hope that in some small way you make an impact on the people you teach. But sometimes it works the other way around. Sometimes your students leave an impact on you.

Sue was one of those students for me.

Since then, I’ve watched her continue to grow and create her own path. Today, Sue is a CMA Registered Certified Clinical Aromatherapist and Certified Sleep Coach and has built B Safe Well Healthy – The Wellness Shop, supporting people through wellbeing, aromatherapy, sleep support and natural approaches.

There is something very full-circle about someone I once had the privilege of teaching now standing beside me as HEARD Media begins its own journey and perhaps even more fittingly, someone who showed me all those years ago that you don’t have to be the loudest person in the room to be heard.

Sue, I’m genuinely thankful and honoured that you’ve chosen to be one of our Founding Partners. 🤍

Welcome to HEARD Media.

🌿 TWO ROCKS & YANCHEP LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE NORTH

There is a lot happening across Two Rocks, Yanchep and Perth’s growing northern corridor.

More families are moving in.

Businesses are opening and growing.
Schools, childcare and community services are supporting an increasing population and with growth comes opportunity but also questions about whether the services and infrastructure surrounding these communities are keeping pace.

Over the coming weeks, HEARD Media will be taking a closer look at the area through the things we talk about every day:
🤍 Families and children
🤍 Education and childcare
🤍 Local businesses
🤍 Community services
🤍 Growth and development
🤍 The issues affecting everyday life

Not just what’s going wrong either.

We want to find the people doing great things, the businesses worth knowing about, the opportunities being created and the issues that deserve a closer look.

Because communities are more than houses being built. They are the people, families and businesses growing inside them.

Got something happening in Two Rocks or Yanchep that deserves to be HEARD? We want to hear from you.

🌿 WELCOME TO OUR FOUNDING PARTNER 🌿

We’re excited to welcome NEST Network and Founder Monique Wilson as a Founding Partner of HEARD Media. 🤍

Monique is an Exceeding-rated independent service owner and the Founder of NEST Network, a national network created to give education and care leaders the practical tools, resources, compliance support and genuine collaboration they need.

The goal? Less time buried in administration and more time leading strong teams and delivering quality outcomes for children.

Anyone who knows me knows why I love this. 😂

Give me policies, procedures, legislation, regulations and compliance and I will happily get right into it and I think I may have finally found someone who gets equally as excited and completely engrossed in reading legislation and regulations as I do. 😂

We’re probably among the very small group of people who can genuinely say we look forward to it. 🤓📚

Then there’s policyPASS, which goes hand in hand with NEST Network, providing another layer of practical policy and compliance support for education and care services.

So yes… you can probably understand why I’m excited about this partnership. 😂

But there are also things about owning and operating an early childhood service that simply aren’t written neatly in a policy.

They’re the unknowns you only know once you know.

The things you learn from actually owning services, managing teams, navigating compliance, dealing with the unexpected and understanding what happens behind the scenes.

That’s why NEST Network matters.

It isn’t just about having another resource. It’s about having access to people who actually understand the realities of the sector and creating a space where leaders can share knowledge rather than having to figure everything out alone.

That fits beautifully with what we’re building through HEARD Media — connection, knowledge, collaboration and giving people a platform to be HEARD.

We’re very excited to have Monique, NEST Network and policyPASS joining us from the beginning as a HEARD Media Founding Partner. 🌿🤍

🚨 CHILDCARE: BEING “IN RATIO” DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN ADEQUATE SUPERVISION

Two recent WA cases involving five-year-old children have resulted in significant penalties for inadequate supervision.

But I think there is a much bigger conversation we need to have because childcare staffing isn’t as simple as looking at one room and counting heads.

Within centre-based services, educator-to-child ratios can generally be calculated across the service, something many of us in the sector have long referred to as “under-the-roof ratios.”

But there is an important distinction.

An educator can only be counted in ratio when they are actually working directly with children and even then, meeting ratio does not automatically mean adequate supervision is being provided.

That matters because there is another side of this conversation that families may never see.

A childcare centre doesn’t necessarily know exactly when a child is going to arrive in the morning or when their parent will collect them in the afternoon.

So educators stay.

Rosters overlap.

Breaks have to be covered.

Qualified educators have to be available.

Someone calls in sick.

A child needs one-to-one attention.

Another child needs toileting.

A parent needs to speak privately with an educator.

An incident happens.

An educator has documentation to complete.

And suddenly the numbers that looked perfectly reasonable on a roster don’t necessarily reflect what’s happening on the floor.

The regulatory and qualification expectations placed on services have also increased significantly over the years.

As well as wages absolutely needed to improve.
Educators deserve to be recognised and properly paid for the professional work they do.
Government wage-support initiatives have helped with those increases. However we also need to be able to talk honestly about the financial and operational pressure of delivering education and care.

Because every additional educator costs money.

Every additional compliance requirement takes resources and services still need to remain financially viable.

But at the end of the day, is meeting the minimum enough?

I don’t think this conversation should become:

“Educators aren’t doing their jobs.”

Nor should it become:

“Centres can’t afford more staff.”

The question should be:

Have we created a system where the regulatory minimum and what is actually required to safely operate a service don’t always match?

Because a service can be technically in ratio and still need another educator.

A roster can comply on paper and still not adequately respond to what is happening at 4:45pm on a Tuesday afternoon and when we’re talking about children leaving services unnoticed, the conversation has to go beyond whether the numbers added up.

We need to talk about ratios, adequate supervision, workforce pressures, funding, qualifications, rostering, service viability and above everything else - children’s safety.

Because there is a lot childcare services are required to do.

There is a lot educators are required to do.

But when it comes to keeping children safe:

Is meeting the minimum really enough?

I’ve had some interesting conversations lately about what HEARD Media could become and they’ve made me think about what I actually want it to stand for.

I don’t want to build media that exists for clickbait.

I don’t want controversy manufactured for attention and I don’t want stories fuelled by hidden motives or agendas.

I want truth.

I want the conversations that others don’t always want to have.

The uncomfortable conversations.
The controversial conversations.
The questions people are sometimes afraid to ask.
The stories that have been hidden, dismissed or simply left unheard.

Because avoiding something doesn’t make it disappear and sometimes the very conversation people want to shut down is the one we need to understand more deeply.

HEARD Media won’t exist to tell you what to think.

It will exist to ask questions, hear different perspectives, challenge where necessary and create space for conversations that matter.

With facts.
With fairness.
With humanity.

No clickbait.
No manufactured outrage.
No hidden agenda.

Just a willingness to go where the conversation needs to go.

🛑 Some conversations need to stop being hidden.

🎤 It’s time to be HEARD.
