There’s no such thing as a boring gravel road. There’s always something to see.

Out here in the Pilbara, I stumbled across this sign marking the route of what was once the longest fence in the world — stretching from the south coast to the north-west of Western Australia.

The fence was surveyed by Alfred Canning between 1901 and 1905, long before he went on to survey the route that would become the Canning Stock Route.

What incredibly resourceful men they must have been. Travelling into some of the most remote country in Australia with little more than determination, basic equipment and an enormous amount of bush knowledge.

It makes you wonder what other stories are hiding along the tracks we drive every day.

Not quite ripe… 🍅

Out here in the Australian interior, the humble bush tomato can be found growing amongst the red dirt, spinifex and desert scrub.

It can be eaten, but knowing your bush tucker is important — some parts need to be removed before it’s safe to eat.

It’s one of those skills that might seem unnecessary until you find yourself a long way from the nearest shop. You never know when a bit of bush knowledge might come in handy.
