Karen Wheatland

Karen Wheatland Karen Wheatland Photographer. Firstly, I would like to let you know that most people call me Kaz. A very successful re-inventor you could say. Kaz X

I love being creative and I especially love getting behind a lens to capture what I see through my own eyes. I have had a career at sea of over 20 years and have travelled the coast of Australia on merchant ships, fishing boats and pearling vessels. I have worked under the water as a pearl diver, on boats as a captain, engineer, cook, and deckhand. I have worked in State and Federal Government, se

rving currently in Local Government and have done a whole range of other jobs. I guess the constant thing in my life is the way I view the world. My vision is unique, and it's fair to say that I look at everything as if it were a photograph. I studied at Curtin University and obtained my Bachelor of Arts (Photography & Illustration), and I also have a commercial drone operator’s license, expanding my ability and my range of sight. This is the start of my own journey into business, and I thank you for taking the time to consider working with me to capture your moment, your project, your staff, or even your loved ones. You won’t be disappointed! Contact me for prices. I can make a package to suit any budget.

That feeling when the air changes and everything starts to bloom again… Kambarang is here.

Such a balmy evening.

You can feel the change in the air, that quiet turning between seasons.
Here on Noongar Boodjar it’s Kambarang, the season of birth - wildflowers blooming, days stretching longer, birds singing again.

Further north on Yamatji Country it’s Mallee, when the land warms and new life stirs.

In the Pilbara, on Yindjibarndi, Ngarluma and Kariyarra Country, the air shifts from the cool dry to the first signs of rain. It’s a time to listen, to breathe, to prepare.

And across Yawuru Country in the Kimberley, Barrgana gives way to storm season, when the winds rise and sea turtles return to shore.

Each Country speaks its own language of change.

Each season carries its own truth.

Together they remind us that renewal is constant and connection is everything.

Sometimes it’s the old photos that stop you in your tracks.

I’ve been meaning to go through my old hard drives for years, and this morning I finally did. Buried in those folders were forgotten gems, like this one.

Over a decade ago I took these photos for Dad to update his Ray White staff shots (come to think of it, I never did invoice him!).
When I came across this image, it stopped me cold. Tears welled up instantly.

These two, Dad and Mike Murphy, were part of something special, alongside Uncle Rob (Pettit). Together they were unstoppable.

Decades of real estate in Geraldton. Decades of friendship, loyalty and shared grit. Mike was with Dad all the way, from Geraldton Estate Agency through to Peet & Co, and finally Ray White. I can still remember each milestone, every rent roll bought, every new chapter, and Dad celebrating each one with me.

Looking at this photo now, there’s so much said in the silence. The pride in Mike’s stance, the warmth in Dad’s eyes. You can see their story in that moment, a lifetime of partnership and respect.

Dad was the original "Weeties." Everyone called him that. Mike always did too. And seeing them together again like this, it reminds me what genuine connection means.

Only have eyes for each other.

Being with them in Italy filled my heart.
At the start of their life together.
Walking, laughing, completely in sync.

There’s a kind of love that doesn’t need to be loud.
It just exists. Easy. True.

The kind that reminds you what really matters.

Days are a little like this.

Cobblestones.

At a glance they all look the same.
But when I really stop and look, every single one is different.
Different shape. Different wear. Different light.
It reminds me that not everyone will see what you see.

Some people only glance.
They don’t notice the effort, the layers, the detail that makes something real.

But I do.
I see it.
And I see me.

So I’ll keep walking.
Finding the beauty in the things that others miss.

Staying grounded, staying true.

Sometimes a moment just stops you.
This was mine.
Trastevere.
A woman at her window, watching the world drift by.
No rush, no noise, just presence.
I called her Nonna in my head.
She felt like every story, every memory, every quiet strength I saw in Rome.
Maybe that’s why this photo stays with me.
Because it reminds me that stillness has its own kind of power.
