Though new to the booth, the Championship Tour's latest commentator has been hustling away for years.

With a lengthy background in competitive surfing, Jesse saw a fork in the road, switched tracks and is now working in media, interviewing past rivals and calling their heats.

"The 2001 Shark Island Challenge was arguably the wildest surf contest ever staged in Australia."

Article by Dan Dobbin now live on Swellnet.

After last year's succesful resurrection of the Shark Island Challenge, the comp is set to run again in 2025. With the waiting period having just kicked off it seems an opportune time to look back at a defining chapter, not just in the event’s history, but in the sport of bodyboarding itself...

"I'd sit in Quiksilver’s corporate boardroom in Los Angeles,” observes Ryan Scanlon, “surrounded by people with material wealth and assets, yet some of them were really challenged in spirit and mind. Then after corporate burnout I'd leave that world for stints in remote areas - living the lifestyle Quiksilver were selling."

Ryan's story, from farm-boy to influential Quiksilver creative, then to starting up his own humble operation, needessentials, also traces the outlines of the surf industry as it rose and fell and ultimately renewed itself.

"Reality checks dished out and a crazy controversial Men's Final."

Steve Shearer reports from a Final's Day that that will be talked about for years to come.

A fitting finale for the event, with 28 waves ridden, 0.4 of a point separating eventual winner Filipe Toledo from runner-up wildcard Julian Wilson. The highest score of the heat, a 9.07 from Pip, was never broadcast, never replayed, and never mentioned by commentators.

With a drip feed of heats coming out of El Salvador it'd be easy to forget there's a CT in progress. Fortunately Steve Shearer has been shirking his beloved dawnies to watch the calls and bring you the hot takes from a so-far lukewarm contest.

I have a mate who just became fabulously wealthy moreorless overnight. Sold a business to a multinational for life-changing money and to an extent he can now afford to kick the tyres on some major enterprises. We spoke briefly about the WSL and he took the lens of a prospective buyer to it. It wasn'...

The 'squirter' boat returns to the Goldy, and surfers cross their fingers for banks.

Following the prolonged battering from TC Alfred, Gold Coast beaches - particularly at the northen end - were heavily eroded. This was made worse last week when high tides combined with long period south swell toppling another lifeguard tower at Surfers Paradise.

Starting next Wednesday, the El Salvador Pro will start slow, inconsistent too, with increased potential towards the end of the waiting period.

Facing south-west into the South Pacific Ocean, El Salvador has one of the largest swell windows in the world - larger even than Hawaii's view into the North Pacific.
