Leader Flashback: Seen here displaying an abundance of beautiful blooms is the E.G. Waterhouse National Camellia Gardens in the early 1970s. It is now 55 years since Lady Cutler wife of then Governor of New South Wales officially opened the gardens on the 18th of July 1970. Set in an area of outcrops of natural sandstone on the shores of Yowie Bay the layout of the Gardens was developed as a four seasons garden to ensure changing vistas for visitors throughout the year. The first plantings of camellias were actually made long before this on the 16th of August 1969 some of which were named for members of the Waterhouse family.
