Kuranda Paper

Kuranda Paper The Kuranda Media Association is a not-for-profit voluntary association established in 1991. November 2012 saw the paper as full colour throughout, 32 page.

Advertising revenue from The Kuranda Paper enables the KMA to provide this community resource, which supports local community groups and projects. The first Kuranda Paper (Kuranda Community News) was produced in July 1991, as an 8-page B&W tabloid. The Kuranda Media Association founding committee was: Joan Dods (President), Jean Anderson (Vice President), Krishna Buhler (Secretary), John Woodbridg

e (Treasurer) and Lydia Graham (Committee). The Production Team was listed (in addition to the committee) as Shep Humson, Steve Dimitriou, Allison Buckley, Sammy Humston. By issue #6, the name had changed to "The Kuranda Paper", pages had grown to 12 tabloid, print run was 1300, and the Production Team now included Gayle Hannah and Susie Serleto. The December 2011 edition saw colour for the first time, on 4 pages, with a distribution of 2400. A 40 page edition was produced in December 2012. The Kuranda Paper is now regularly 32-36 pages and has a print run ( post COVID-19) of 4500 and growing again, and is delivered by Australia Post to approximately 2300 Post Office Boxes and home letterboxes in the Kuranda, Speewah, Koah and Myola areas. In addition, bundles of the paper are delivered to multiple distribution points around Kuranda, including around the village and Speewah, Koah and Oak Forest, Then outlets in Mareeba, Tolga, Atherton and Smithfield. A full list of stockists appears on Page 2 of every edition. The present KMA Committee consists of Nettie O'Connell (President/Production), Kerstin Brown (Vice President), Gayle Hannah (Treasurer/ Production), Trish Green (Secretary) and Toni Rogers (Members Representative). The KMA organisation is volunteer run and the Committee and Production team is supported by a team of proof readers and our heroic paper folders, who no matter the weather, assemble at dawn once a month to lovingly quarter fold 2900 copies of 4500 copies, so they fit snuggly into every post office or mail box in the Kuranda district. The Kuranda Paper is funded entirely by advertising, and profits after production costs support local community groups and projects. The Kuranda Paper is also available to read online at www.kurandapaper.com. All past editions have been loaded onto the website, providing a unique record of local history stretching back over 31 years.

This month’s masthead features details from Grevilleas, a hand-embroidered circle on silk (20cm in diameter) by Gayle Hannah.

“I have been participating in a 52 week embroidery challenge during 2026 through a global Facebook group. Each week's challenge has certain ‘rules’ including which stitches to use.
This piece was my introduction to Pistil Stitch, an elongated version of the French Knot. The history of the Pistil Stitch predates the Arts and Crafts movement though it was used by 18th century embroiderers at William Morris's company. To me it evoked the complexity and beauty of Grevillea flowers.”

Our masthead this month is an aerial photograph by Kevin Explores, of the Savannahlander train crossing Surprise Creek on the Cairns-Kuranda railway line. This photo was taken by Kevin Explores in July 2023.

Sadly, this year operation of The Savannahlander on the section of railway line between Kuranda and Mareeba was halted due to the poor condition of several wooden rail bridges, which are in need of repairs to allow the track to be re-opened. Currently, Savannahlander passengers are being bussed up to Mareeba to commence a journey which has historically started in Cairns.

To date no funding has been allocated to repairing these wooden bridges and that is a great concern because it would be a terrible loss if what should be a temporary situation, to be remedied, became permanent because of a lack of political will to keep the entire length of the historic, and strategically important, line open for all rail users.

You can enjoy more of Kevin Explores’ amazing birds eye views of the Far North Queensland landscape on his page and his website www.kevinexplores.com.au

Our masthead this month features detail from SAMPLER #1, hand-embroidered by Robyn King which will be exhibited at the Tableland Regional Gallery in Atherton as part of the Kuranda Arts Co-operative’s “Gathered” group exhibition, opening 7 October. It measures 53 cm x 56 cm and is hand stitched, incorporating fabric, fabric paint and silk threads.

“In this piece, I have gathered plants from the Myrtaceae family – Eucalypts, Callistemon, Melaleuca, Myrtle, Syzygium and others.Through layered fabrics , fabric paint and a mélange of stitches in colourful silk threads, I pieced together my interpretation of this diverse botanical family. This work is an expression of my admiration for the resilience and beauty of Australian flora.”

Our masthead this month features the iconic ceramic tile mural on
the outside of the Ngoonbi office on Coondoo Street. The building
was also known as the Jilli Binna Information Centre when an arts,
craft and museum display space was created there in 1975. The mural was designed by Edward Deemera from Yarrabah Pottery, under instruction from potter Peter van der Helder from Kuranda. Artists were Adelaide Major, Elaine Stafford, Terrence Canendo and James Ludwick. Although plans for a major redevelopment of the site are underway this mural will be saved and integrated into a new building in recognition of its cultural, artistic and heritage importance.

Our Story

The Kuranda Paper is a free independent monthly community newspaper produced and published by the Kuranda Media Association Inc (KMA) a not-for-profit voluntary association. Head of Production was Shep Humston. November 2012 saw the paper as full colour throughout, 32 page.
