Our Story
The Kuranda Paper is a free independent monthly community newspaper produced and published by the Kuranda Media Association Inc (KMA) a not-for-profit voluntary association. The first Kuranda Paper (published as the Kuranda Community News) was produced in July 1991, as an 8-page B&W tabloid. KMA founding committee: Joan Dods (President), Jean Anderson (Vice President), Krishna Buhler (Secretary), John Woodbridge (Treasurer) and Lydia Graham (Committee). Head of Production was Shep Humston.
By issue #6, the name had changed to "The Kuranda Paper", pages had grown to 12 tabloid, print run was 1300, and the Production Team now included Gayle Hannah and Susie Serleto.
The December 2011 edition saw colour for the first time, on 4 pages, with a distribution of 2400. November 2012 saw the paper as full colour throughout, 32 page. A 40 page edition was produced in December 2012 and most recently in February 2020.
The Kuranda Paper is now regularly 32 - 36 pages, has a print run of 5000, and is delivered by Australia Post to over 2000 Post Office Boxes and home letterboxes in the Kuranda, Speewah, Koah and Myola areas. In addition, bundles of the paper are delivered to multiple distribution points around Kuranda, Mareeba, Tolga, Atherton and Smithfield These distribution points are targeted towards both locals and tourists, and include service stations, surgeries, tourist information centres, coffee shops, newsagents etc to ensure very wide coverage throughout the area.
Profits generated by advertising in The Kuranda Paper support local community groups and projects.
The present Committee consists of President Michelle Murray-Beckman, Vice President/ Production Nettie O’Connell and Treasurer/Production Gayle Hannah (back to the paper after being a foundation member 29 years ago). The Production team as of February 2020 consists of Gayle Hannah and Nettie O’Connell. Support for production includes proof reading by Toni Rogers, Sue McArthur, Kerrie Foster and Garth Owen as well as an intrepid band of paper folders, who once a month gather to fold thousands of papers to enable them to fit in thousands of mail boxes. Technical support to The Kuranda Paper is provided by Thomas Verfuth ( Cairns Computer Support, Speewah based).
