On This Day – 16 Years Ago ❤️
Sixteen years ago, I wrote about how much I loved being mum to two curious little people. Back then, our dinner table conversations revolved around questions like:
"Did God create Mars?"
"Why isn't everyone a Christian?"
"Did Adam and Eve have belly buttons?" 😂
I remember loving the challenge of trying to answer their endless questions and watching their faces light up when understanding dawned, connections were made, and new discoveries unfolded.
Fast forward 16 years...
Those little people are now young adults - and that same joy is still there.
The questions haven’t stopped; they’ve just grown with them. Today our conversations now stretch into faith, purpose, relationships, careers, suffering, culture, justice, finances, the future, and what it really means to follow God in a rapidly changing world. We don’t always have all the answers, but what I love is that the questions keep coming - and the conversations continue.
What strikes me when I look at these two photos side by side is how much parenting really isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about creating a home where questions are welcomed, conversations are safe, and no topic is off limits. Hubby and I have always wanted our kids to know they don’t need to have life figured out before coming to the table - they can bring their doubts, dreams, fears, opinions, and curiosities, and we’ll work through them together.
The little moments of understanding are still there too… just in different forms now. Instead of Mars and belly buttons, its life decisions, faith, identity, and navigating adulthood - but the same spark of insight, reflection, and growth still lights up their eyes.
And perhaps one of the greatest blessings of all is seeing both J and K continue to walk strongly in their faith as adults - not because they were given all the answers, but because they were given space to ask the questions.
Looking at these two photos reminds me that parenting isn’t about getting everything right. It’s about walking alongside your children long enough that they always know where to turn when they’re searching for truth.
Still learning. Still laughing. Still growing together. ❤️
