The Lithgow Panthers have been crowned 2026 Premier League Hockey Champions after defeating Parkes 2 - 1 in today’s Grand Final at the Lithgow Hockey Complex.

Two people have been charged following an alleged vehicle theft and arson in the state’s Central Tablelands this week.
About 3.15pm on Monday 31 August 2026, officers attached to Chifley Police District were called to a residence on Mort Street, Lithgow, following reports a vehicle had allegedly been stolen.
Police arrived and were told a Holden utility had allegedly been stolen from the address sometime between 2.45pm and 3.15pm the same day.

Officers were also informed the vehicle had crashed into the rear fence of a residence on Reid Avenue, Lithgow shortly after.
About 9am the following day (Tuesday 1 September 2026), emergency services were called to Hassans Walls Road, Lithgow, following reports of a car fire.

Police arrived on scene and NSW Rural Fire Service extinguished the flames; however, the Holden utility was destroyed.
The vehicle was seized for forensic examination.

About 4.15pm the same day, police spoke to a 14-year-old boy at Lithgow Police Station who was dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.
Following inquiries, about 9am yesterday (Thursday 3 September 2026), police executed a search warrant at a home in Lithgow where several items were seized.
After further inquiries, officers attended a home in Wallerawang shortly after where they arrested an 18-year-old man after a brief foot pursuit. He was taken to Lithgow Police Station.
About 11am the same day, police arrested a different 14-year-old boy at another home in Wallerawang. He was also taken to Lithgow Police Station.
The 18-year-old was charged with four offences,
• Steal motor vehicle
• Learner not accompanied by driver/police officer/tester
• Damage property by fire/explosives, and
• Destroy or damage property.
He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Lithgow Local Court on Thursday 8 October 2026.

The 14-year-old was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, and was granted strict conditional bail to face a children’s court on Friday 9 October 2026.

Three people have been charged following a vehicle stop in the state’s Central Tablelands in which more than an estimated $9000 worth of suspected stolen goods were seized.

About 1.20am today (Friday 4 September 2026), officers attached to Chifley Police District stopped a sedan at the intersection of Lockyer and Andrew Streets, Bowenfels, south of Lithgow, for random breath testing.
The driver – a 34-year-old man – was subject to a roadside breath test which returned a negative result.

During a search of the vehicle, police located and seized a significant amount of personal identification cards, debit cards, new clothing, shoes, clothing accessories, mobile phone accessories, and a security-tag removing device.

The total value of the items – which police will allege are the proceeds of crime – is estimated to be over $9000.

Police arrested the 34-year-old man and his passengers – two women aged 43 and 31 – and took them to Lithgow Police Station.
The man and 31-year-old woman were each charged with recklessly deal with proceeds of crime greater than $5000, and goods in personal custody suspected stolen (not motor vehicle/vessel).

The older woman was charged with recklessly deal with proceeds of crime greater than $5000, and goods in personal custody suspected stolen (not motor vehicle/vessel) (two counts).

Each were granted strict conditional bail to face Lithgow Local Court on Thursday 15 October 2026.

A woman has died following a single vehicle crash overnight.
About 12:15am today (Saturday 29 August 2026), emergency services were called to Mayfield Road, Mayfield, about 11km northwest of Oberon, following reports of a crash.

Officers attached to Chifley Police District attended and located a single vehicle that had crashed into a fence.

A female passenger of the vehicle died at the scene. She is yet to be formally identified.

The driver – a 71-year-old man – was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition.

A crime scene was established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash has commenced.

Police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.

2LT NEWS - Springvale wins the 2026 Western Mines Rescue Competition.

For the 4th consecutive year the Springvale mines rescue team has secured a place on the national stage after taking out top honours at the 2026 Western Mines Rescue competition, held today (Friday 28/8) at Ulan Colliery near Mudgee.
It was a double win for Centennial Coal, with the Airly mines rescue team taking second place.

The win came in a milestone year for Mines Rescue, which is celebrating 100 years of service to the NSW coal industry through emergency preparedness, specialist training and rescue capability.

Seven teams from mines across the Lithgow and Mudgee regions competed at the event to test their skills in a demanding series of practical challenges designed to replicate the pressure of real emergency situations.

Teams demonstrated technical expertise, decision-making, leadership and teamwork while responding to evolving scenarios. These included first aid, fire fighting, search and rescue and hazard control.

The competition not only recognised operational excellence, but also reflected the ongoing commitment of mine rescue personnel to maintaining the highest standards of preparedness across the industry.

As Western district winners, the Springvale team will now represent the region at the Australian Mines Rescue underground competition in the Hunter Valley in October, competing against the best rescue teams from NSW and Queensland.

2026 WESTERN MINES RESCUE COMPETITION.

Mines Rescue teams from across the Lithgow and Mudgee coalfields have gathered today at the Ulan West Operations near Mudgee today to compete at the annual Western Mines Rescue underground competition.

7 teams are doing battle for the right to represent at this year's National Competition.

Teams taking part include:-
• Glencore Ulan West
• Glencore Ulan Underground
• Lucky 7’s (mixed team, brigades from Lithgow and Mudgee)
• Centennial Coal Clarence
• Centennial Coal Springvale
• Centennial Coal Airly
• Yancoal Moolarben

Teams are being put through a number of disciplines:- several simulation exercises to demonstrate knowledge and the use of mines rescue equipment in realistic scenarios, including exercises to test hazard awareness, first aid and firefighting.

Winners will be announced at a presentation dinner this evening. Years of service awards will also be presented for 5, 15, and 25 years’ service.

TRAFFIC UPDATE @ 7:15PM - Great Western Highway reopened at Mount Victoria following crash
The Great Western Highway has reopened in both directions following a truck and car crash approaching Harley Avenue at Mount Victoria.

EARLIER - Emergency services remain on site however all lanes have reopened and diversions have been lifted.

Motorists should continue to exercise caution and allow extra travel time through the area as heavy traffic clears.

The closure of the Great Western Highway due to emergency roadworks at Victoria Pass remains in place.
