2LT NEWS - Changed traffic conditions between Lithgow and Mount Victoria as maintenance work continues on the detour route
Motorists are advised of changed night traffic conditions on the Great Western Highway detour route as work continues to strengthen this section of road while Victoria Pass is closed to all traffic.
Chifley Road and Darling Causeway
In addition to work already underway, work will be taking place at multiple locations on Chifley Road and Darling Causeway, from Monday 20 April through to June 2026. This work will be carried out at night to minimise the impact to motorists, work hours will be 8pm to 5am Sunday to Friday.
The work continuing on Chifley Road and the Darling Causeway includes heavy patching, re-laying asphalt and refreshing the line marking, to provide road users with a smoother, safer road surface.
Chifley Road
Additional critical safety work at Scenic Hill will be carried out between 8pm and 5am from Monday 20 April to Thursday 30 April, weather permitting.
Due to the location of the work on Scenic Hill, traffic will be held at the base of the hill which may cause delays of up to 20 minutes through the work site. This is the safest way to manage traffic and will help with congestion, prolonged stopping on a steep incline and further delays due to breakdowns. Vehicles will be released in groups, allowing them to travel smoothly and safely up the hill.
Transport for NSW acknowledges this will add further travel time for motorists using the Great Western Highway detour via Darling Causeway and Chifley Road. Motorists are advised to allow an extra 45 minutes to travel through the work sites and the full detour.
Main Street and Mort Street Lithgow
Transport will carry out minor core hole drilling in Lithgow on Main Street and Mort Street, to provide an assessment of the pavement condition. Crews will backfill core holes when drilling is complete.
This work will be carried out between 8pm and 5am over two nights from Wednesday 22 April, weather permitting.
Travel times may increase by five minutes on these two nights, with the entire detour route potentially taking up to 50 minutes.
Changed traffic conditions will be in place during work hours. Single lane closures, intermittent stopping, and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.
Transport is working proactively to increase the durability and resilience of Chifley Road and ensure it continues to provide a safe, resilient detour route while Victoria Pass is closed for urgent road repair work.
Transport thanks motorists for their patience during this time.
