There's a particular kind of person who turns the thing that once made them feel like an outsider into the exact thing that makes them indispensable to other people going through the same thing.

Carrie Li is that kind of person.

She arrived in Australia as an international student, navigated her way into a graduate role at PwC, became an SBS representative, and now works as a career coach and community builder at the Western Sydney Startup Hub. Through MentorAll, she helps Asian international students land the corporate roles in Australia that, from the outside, can look almost impossible to access without the right guidance.

If you're an international student wondering how anyone actually breaks into the Australian job market, or you're simply curious what it takes to turn a disadvantage into a genuine edge, this is worth your time. Carrie has lived every part of the journey she now coaches other people through.

She joins Valentina Astrid and Davy Custar live this Friday, straight after Thomas Derricott at 4PM.

Breakup Buddy: The App Vinisha's Building to Help Men Heal"

Breakups hit everyone hard β€” but men often go through it alone. Vinisha is in the middle of building Breakup Buddy, an app designed to connect men going through a breakup with an "anchor buddy" β€” someone to lean on while they navigate their next chapter. Here's what it's all about, straight from the founder.

Funny thing about startup books β€” most of them are written either by people who've never set foot inside one, or by founders telling their own story, which comes with a fairly predictable amount of polish.

Thomas Derricott-Yap is neither. He spent years as an early employee inside Australian startups, watching things unfold from the inside before anyone outside knew the company's name β€” and then sat down with 20 of the country's leading founders to write Riding the Unicorn: The Startup Guide You'll Want to Read.

If you've ever wondered what's actually going on behind the version of a company you read about, today's conversation should give you a fairly honest answer. And if you're thinking about a leap of your own, there's a decent chance something said today will be more useful than you expect.

The Real Reason They Walked Away From 'Normal' Jobs for Coffee"Nobody just falls into the coffee industry.

There's always a moment β€” a decision, a risk, sometimes a bit of madness. We sat down with two people who took that leap, and asked them to take us back to the exact moment it happened. What we got was honest, unexpected, and a little bit personal.

The Briefcase Effect β€” And the Man Who Inspired It"Vinisha calls it "the briefcase effect" β€” and it all traces back to her dad. It's a story about watching someone you love carry more than they ever let on, and how that shaped the way she sees work, identity, and what we don't say out loud.

"What Australia Does Differently With Coffee (And Why It Works)"Everyone says Aussie coffee culture is "different" β€” but nobody actually explains why. So we asked two coffee entrepreneurs straight up: what is it that we're doing here that the rest of the world hasn't figured out yet? Their answer might change how you order your next flat white. β˜•πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί

05/06/2026

There are conversations that are enjoyable. And then there are conversations where someone hands you a cup of coffee mid-interview and suddenly everything becomes a little more real.

Today was the latter.

Bjorn Halfmann and Shreya Gupta joined Valentina Astrid Phan and Davy Nguyen on 3 Quirks and a Turk and did something rather wonderful β€” they made us think differently about something most of us do without thinking at all. That cup of coffee you had this morning. Do you actually know what’s in it?

Because here’s the thing Bjorn and Shreya are quietly passionate about β€” and I mean quietly in the most deceptive sense, because once they get going on it, it is anything but quiet. A lot of what gets sold as coffee, isn’t really coffee. Not in the way it should be. Australian Coffee Culture is built on a different premise entirely β€” quality you can actually taste, ingredients that are genuinely what they say they are, sustainability that isn’t just a word on a label, and a real commitment to supporting local.

We tasted it on air. I’ll leave the verdict to the listeners. But I will say β€” there was a noticeable silence in the studio immediately after, which is usually a good sign.

Bjorn and Shreya β€” thank you for the conversation, the coffee, and for building something that actually means something. We’re rooting for you.

Where’s your briefcase?

Vinisha Rathod came into the studio today and did what she does best β€” she named things that most people have been quietly carrying around without a label. We talked about The Briefcase Effect, her book about clarity and what actually gets in the way of capable people doing their best work. We talked about strategy, about inflection points, about the moment you realise the thing holding you back is yourself.

And then she told us about something she’s building that I haven’t quite been able to stop thinking about since.

A breakup buddy app. Designed specifically for men.

It sounds simple. It is anything but. Because what Vinisha is really trying to solve is something far larger and far more urgent than a breakup. The su***de rate among men is devastating. And one of the reasons β€” not the only one, but a significant one β€” is that men simply don’t talk. Not the way women do. Not with the same ease, the same openness, the same willingness to say I’m not okay and mean it out loud to another person.

The app is designed to change that. To give men a buddy. A community. A place to process divorce, depression, grief, loss β€” the things that quietly accumulate until they become unbearable. A place to connect before the silence becomes too loud.

It is, I think, one of the most quietly important things I’ve heard discussed on this show.

Vinisha β€” thank you. For the conversation, for the book, and for building something that might genuinely save lives.
