Sad news today: we remember Mr. Shunsaku Tamiya, the visionary founder and long-time chairman of Tamiya, Inc., following his passing. His journey began in 1946, when Tamiya Shoji & Co. was founded as a sawmill in Shizuoka, Japan. By 1948, under his leadership, the company had pivoted to crafting highâquality wooden model kitsâand it never looked back.
Over the decades, Mr. Tamiya transformed a modest modelâmaking firm into a global icon. Under his vision in the 1960s and â70s, Tamiya launched its first plastic kit in 1960, introduced motorised 1:35 tanks in 1962, and ignited the R/C boom in 1976 with the cultâfavorite 1/12 Porsche 934 Turbo. In 1977, he became president of Tamiya Plastic Model Co., then led Tamiya, Inc. as chairman since 2008âcontinuing to champion the motto âFirst in Quality Around the Worldâ.
For me personally, it all started at age 9 with a Tamiya Frogâthe little R/C that lit the fuse for my lifelong obsession with cars, racing, and building. That toy wasnât just plasticâit was a gateway to passion. It sparked creativity, technical curiosity, and a love for the thrill of speed.
Mr. Tamiya didnât just build model kitsâhe built bridges to imagination, craftsmanship, and dreams around the world. His legacy lives on, not only in every Tamiya kit assembled, but in every enthusiast whose fascination for machines and motion began with one of his creations.
Rest in peace, Mr. Tamiya. Thank you for designing more than modelsâyou designed futures.
