Hey parents and carers – did the young people in your life receive any technology recently?

It’s important to understand the safety features of devices, apps and games if they connect to the internet. These include reviewing the location, privacy settings, parental controls and consider blocking or limiting apps.

Using strong privacy settings means that you can control who sees your child’s information and can help reduce inappropriate contact from people online. Sadly, chat and direct message functions in online games are popular ways for online child s*x offenders to approach young people.

We’re encouraging parents and carers to follow our safety tips to help you and your child stay one step ahead and enjoy the online environment this holiday season.

Even if you’re unsure how to use some technology, you can learn enough to understand how to keep your child safe thanks to the AFP-led ThinkUKnow Australia program. This initiative has a plenty of resources to help you understand the tech, the challenges and the steps you can take to help keep them safe online.

For device resources, safety guides and information about how to navigate online safety conversations visit: www.thinkuknow.org.au/resources-tab/parents-and-carers
